Il paraît que Kirlian et le docteur Mikhail Gaikin auraient découvert que 700 points standards d'acupuncture correspondraient exactement aux points répertoriés comme sources des flamboiements visibles sur les photographies. Cela leur aurait permis de fabriquer vers 1966 un appareil électronique appelé le “tobiscope”, qui serait capable de repérer les points d'acupuncture au dixième de millimètre près.
