Une nappe est captive lorsque son niveau (surface piézométrique) est au-dessus du toit imperméable de la formation géologique qui la contient. Une nappe est libre quand il n'y a pas de toit imperméable.

L'imperméable est un terrain moins perméable que l'aquifère et qui limite la nappe par son imperméabilité relative. Le mur imperméable est sous la nappe, le toit imperméable au-dessus.
