Substantial reductions in supply costs were achieved through continuous process improvement [for oil sands mining]: however during the 1990s there were two major innovations which resulted in large reductions in operating costs. First, there was a move towards replacing the draglines and bucketwheel reclaimers with mining trucks and power shovels.
