Le principe de la tomographie consiste à déplacer en sens inverse la source de rayons X et le film selon un mouvement identique et symétrique par rapport à un plan qui constitue le plan de la coupe à étudier; seul ce dernier apparaîtra sur le cliché, les plans antérieurs ou postérieurs étant effacés.
