La tomographie par protons utilise des protons dont l'énergie est supérieure à 1000 mev. Ces protons vont réagir sur les noyaux et non sur la couronne d'électrons périphériques. Ils sont donc moins affectés par la masse atomique que les autres radiations. Des compteurs à réseau permettent de rechercher l'angle de déviation qu'ils ont subi au cours des chocs nucléaires. Et cela va permettre une reconstruction tridimensionnelle de l'image radiographique.
