L'intoxication neurotoxique par fruits de mer (INFM) a été décrite chez des personnes ayant consommé des bivalves exposés aux «marées rouges» de dinoflagellés (Ptychodiscus breve). Jusqu'ici, la maladie est restée circonscrite au Golfe du Mexique et aux secteurs situés au large des côtes de la Floride. Les brévétoxines entraînent une forte mortalité parmi les poissons, et les marées rouges de ce dinoflagellé s'accompagnent de véritables hécatombes de poissons.
