C'est un phénomène qui déroute très souvent les nouveaux plaisanciers : lorsque l'on ralentit et que l'on casse l'erre d'un bateau face au vent, celui-ci ne se maintient pas sur sa ligne et commence à pivoter sur lui-même, gênant la manœuvre envisagée. [...] Un bateau sans vitesse ne restera pas face au vent. Effectivement, un bateau sans erre va systématiquement [...] se positionner en travers du vent plus ou moins rapidement en fonction de la forme de sa carène, de la prise au vent des structures aériennes (cabine, hauteur de franc-bord, etc.) et[,] bien sûr[,] de la force du vent. [...] Le bateau sans erre (cas d'une panne moteur par exemple) qui se met en travers du vent va également se mettre en travers des vagues, ce qui peut avoir une conséquence immédiate sur le confort des passagers[,] voire sur leur sécurité si la mer est très formée.
