En 1865, à la suite de la découverte des mines d'or en Australie et en Californie, pour remédier à la pénurie relative d'argent, l'Union monétaire latine, qui réunissait la France, l'Italie, la Suisse, la Belgique décida de réduire le titre des pièces d'argent pour abaisser leur valeur exprimée en or et de limiter le pouvoir libératoire et la frappe libre à la seule pièce d'argent de 5 F.

De patrón bimetálico oro-plata, se estableció en 1865 entre Francia, Bélgica, Italia y Suiza, por la Convención de París de 23 de diciembre de ese año. Grecia se adhirió en 1869 y un año antes, al reorganizarse el sistema monetario basado en la peseta, España adoptó como moneda básica la de cinco pesetas, o duro, de las mismas dimensiones y ley que las de la UML para francos, liras, etc. Tenía una relación oro-plata de 1/15,5 que, al romperse por las fuertes producciones argentíferas, condujo al patrón bimetálico «cojo» y a la virtual desorganización de la Unión.
