The Iran-Iraq War lasted eight years and cost both countries literally hundreds of thousands of casualties before a ceasefire was agreed to in mid-August 1988. The United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG), which involved military observers from 26 nations, was created to observe and supervise the ceasefire and the withdrawal of Iranian and Iraqi forces back behind their own borders. The mission continued until January 1991, when the Iraqi-based observers and staff were removed in the wake of the Gulf War. La guerre entre l'Iran et l'Iraq a duré huit ans et a fait littéralement des centaines de milliers de victimes dans les deux pays avant qu'un cessez-le-feu intervienne, au milieu d'août 1988.
