Cuando múltiples usuarios tienen acceso a los mismos archivos (ficheros) o bases de datos, el bloqueo de los archivos provee un servicio de gestión de datos en una base de "primero en llegar, primero en ser servido". El archivo se bloquea cuando un usuario lo está usando y ningún otro usuario puede tener acceso al mismo hasta que el primero haya terminado con él.
