Suitable glasses are first melted and shaped by the usual glassmaking techniques; a subsequent treatment nucleates crystals and as the temperatures increase these crystals grow until the glass is completely changed into crystals. Les vitro-céramiques, appelées aussi «vitrocérames», sont fabriquées à partir d'un verre qui, après coulée, est soumis à des traitements thermiques de nucléation, puis de grossissement des germes afin de favoriser le développement d'une ou plusieurs phases cristallines. Ces dernières sont susceptibles d'incorporer dans leur réseau des radionucléides déterminés. Pour obtenir une cristallisation bien dispersée et contrôlée des agents de nucléation tels que TiO2 ou ZrO2 sont fréquemment ajoutés. La présence de plusieurs espèces cristallines dans le même matériau est nécessaire pour bloquer efficacement l'ensemble des produits de fission, la phase vitreuse étant réduite à un faible pourcentage. 5, record 1, French, - vitroc%C3%A9ramique
