In 2000, Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) decided to designate a World Intellectual Property Day. Their aim was to raise awareness of the role of intellectual property in our daily lives, and to celebrate the contribution made by innovators and artists to the development of societies across the globe. En 2000, les États membres de l'Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI) ont décidé de célébrer une Journée mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle. Leur but était de sensibiliser le public à l'importance de la propriété intellectuelle dans notre vie quotidienne et de rendre hommage aux innovateurs et aux artistes pour leur contribution au développement des sociétés partout dans le monde.
