Dans une première étape (LEPI qui vient de s'achever), chacun des faisceaux devait avoir une énergie de 55 GeV permettant la production du boson Z °. La seconde étape, LEP 200, devrait fournir des faisceaux de 100 GeV pour étudier la production par paires de bosons W+ et W-. Un autre paramètre important d'une telle machine est sa luminosité, à savoir le nombre d'événements observés à l'interaction des deux faisceaux, en supposant que la probabilité d'occurrence du processus soit égale à l'unité. Pour observer des phénomènes très rares tels que la production de particules Z °, il faut que la luminosité soit très grande (pour le LEP 1,7 X 1031 cm2s-1).

Lors de l'interaction entre un électron et un positron, ces deux particules peuvent disparaître pour donner naissance à un Z °. La probabilité de production du Z ° varie en fonction de la somme des énergies de l'électron et du positron. Cette variation, appelée aussi courbe d'excitation, se présente sous la forme d'un résonance ayant son maximum quand l'énergie totale est égale à la masse du Z °, soit (91, 096+- 0,29) GeV. La courbe d'excitation peut être calculée à partir du Modèle Standard et son amplitude dépend du nombre Nv de familles de neutrinos. La comparaison avec les points expérimentaux montre que seules trois familles de neutrinos existent dans la nature.
