The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), established in 1992 to promote investment and make members a competitive production bloc in global markets, only becomes operational in 2008. It is implemented through a common preferential tariff scheme covering a broad range of agricultural products, iron, steel, petroleum and manufactured goods. La Zone de libre-échange de l'ANASE (ZLEA), instaurée en 1992 pour promouvoir les investissements et faire de ses membres une force de production compétitive sur les marchés internationaux, ne sera opérationnelle qu'en 2008. Elle passe par un régime tarifaire préférentiel commun couvrant une large gamme de produits agricoles, le fer, l'acier, le pétrole et les biens manufacturés.
