The bedrock which underlies the overburden is an important consideration and may control the contaminant migration pathway. For example, a porous sandstone formation may decrease travel times to the biosphere, particularly if the facility [an abandoned mine used for the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes] is in a groundwater recharge zone. 7, record 2, English, - bedrock

The modern doctrine of strict liability for the escape of dangerous substances had its genesis in 1866, in the leading case of Rylands v. Fletcher. The defendant millowners decided to construct a water reservoir on their land for the purpose of supplying water to their factory. On the chosen site there was a disused shaft of an abandoned mine, but owing to the negligence of the engineers, a firm of independent contractors who had been entrusted with the work, this fact was not discovered until the water broke into the staft and flooded the plaintiff's adjoining mine through communicating passages. 1, record 3, English, - escape%20of%20dangerous%20substances

In an effort to ensure that mine sites are not abandoned without proper reclamation being carried out, governments have required mining companies to post performance bonds, letters of credit or other financial guarantees. Recently, some jurisdictions in Canada are taking a new approach, requiring that companies contribute to mandated mine reclamation trust funds. The budget proposes to permit an income tax deduction for contributions into qualifying mine reclamation trust funds in the year in which they are made. Under current rules, reclamation expenses can only be deducted when expenses are actually incurred. 2, record 5, English, - mine%20reclamation%20trust%20fund

1, record 5, French, - fonds%20en%20fiducie%20de%20r%C3%A9g%C3%A9n%C3%A9ration%20mini%C3%A8re
