Cold brachythecium moss(Brachythecium frigidum)... is a shiny moss that can be green, brownish, rich golden or golden brown in colour, that exists in moderately dense mats. This species is very common in western North America and can be confused with other species despite having distinctive characters. The leaves have a somewhat auriculate base formed by the convex group of enlarged pellucid alar cells, a conspicuous row of large cells across the insertion, strong plication and evenly serrulate to serrate margins. Cold brachythecium moss can be found in soil in wet places, moderate shade to open sun, on rock and fallen trunks. It is found in Alberta and British Columbia in low to high elevations ranging from 0 to 3, 300 [metres above sea level]... 1, record 19, English, - cold%20brachythecium%20moss

The mercurial barometer consists of a glass tube, sealed at one end and filled with pure mercury. After being heated to expel the air, it is inverted in a small cup of mercury called the cistern. The mercury in the tube sinks slightly, creating above it a vacuum(the Torricellian vacuum). Atmospheric pressure on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column in the tube, which varies in height with variations in atmospheric pressure and hence with changes in elevation, generally decreasing with increases in height above sea level. 3, record 31, English, - barometer%20cistern

We all fly with instruments. The altimeter measures height above a reference.... The aneroid altimeter uses a small sealed capsule containing air. As the instrument goes up, the air pressure in the capsule increases and by the design of the capsule, it is allowed to expand in a certain direction. This expansion is coupled by mechanical linkages to a dial display. The dial can be adjusted by a knob to read say height above sea level(QNH) or height above the field(QFE). Snowline ... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round - and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt. 6, record 47, English, - permanent%20snowline

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer(usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Factors affecting the location of the snow line are the quantity of snowfall, the steepness of the slope on which snow rests, the exposure of an area to the sun and prevailing winds, the type and velocity of the winds, and the presence or absence of large bodies of water. The level of the snow line is much lower in winter than in summer. It is also affected by distance from the equator, along which it is found at an altitude of c. 3 mi(5 km) ;in polar regions it is at sea level. 4, record 47, English, - permanent%20snowline

Originally described in the diaries of the missionary Hans Egede Saabye as a see-saw in temperature between Greenland and Denmark (Saabye, 1942), the NAO was later defined by Sir Gilbert Walker as "the tendency for pressure to be low near Iceland in winter when it is high near the Azores and south-west Europe" (Walker, 1924; Walker and Bliss, 1932). Accounting for more than 1/3 of the total variance of the sea level pressure (SLP) field over the North Atlantic, the NAO is most pronounced during the winter months (December through March) due to an increased sea air temperature contrast (Barnston and Livezey, 1987). 4, record 48, English, - North%20Atlantic%20oscillation

Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave's voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 50, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

A list of all the important formation tops picked in the well by the petroleum geologist. Notice there are two numbers for each top. The first number is the actual measured depth in feet from a fixed elevation reference point on the rig(usually the KB, or Kelly Bushing, which is located about 1 feet above the derrick floor). The second number has a minus(-) sign in front of it. This is the calculated depth of the formation top in relation to the permanent datum, which is usually sea level. This type of top is known as a "subsea" top. Subsea tops can be easily compared to each other because they are all adjusted to the same elevation reference. 6, record 64, English, - formation%20top

Absolute atmospheres(or Atmospheres absolute, or ATA)-The ambient pressure including the air column over the water. The air column=1 atm. at sea level. In sea water, another atmosphere is added each 33 FSW. There is an increase in pressure per foot of sea water equivalent to 1/33 or. 03030303. So ATA may be calculated by multiplying the depth(FSW) by. 0303030 and then adding 1 for the air above the water. i. e. the ATA at 46 FSW=(46 [asterisk]. 0303030) + 1=2. 3939 ATA. to convert ATA to FSW.

Frequently, geopotential in the atmosphere is referred to as dynamic height, as suggested by the use of the practical unit above. In the sea, the geopotential is negative in reference to that of the sea level geoid. The term dynamic depth is therefore commonly employed as the negative of the geopotential in the sea. Heat-loving microbes, or thermophiles, are among the best studied of the extremophiles. Thermophiles reproduce, or grow readily in temperatures greater than 45 degrees Celsius(113 degrees Fahrenheit), and some of them, referred to as hyperthermophiles, favor temperatures above 80 degrees C(176 degrees F). Some hyperthermophiles even thrive in environments hotter than 100 degrees C(212 degrees F), the boiling point of water at sea level. In comparison, most-variety bacteria grow fastest in temperatures between 25 and 40 degrees C(77 and 104 degrees F). Further, no multicellular animals or plants have been found to tolerate temperatures above about 50 degrees C(122 degrees F), and no microbial eukarya yet discovered can tolerate long-term exposure to temperatures higher than about 60 degrees C(140 degrees F). 1, record 75, English, - hyperthermophile
