ACROMION [16 records]

Record 1 2024-10-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
CONT

Mid-upper arm circumference(MUAC) is measured in adults and children, to the nearest 0. 1 cm [centimeter], using a flexible nonstretch tape laid at the midpoint between the acromion and olecranon processes on the shoulder blade and the ulna, respectively, of the arm... MUAC is a measure of the sum of the muscle and subcutaneous fat in the upper arm. In severe malnutrition both fat and muscle are reduced in the upper arm.... MUAC can be used as an indicator of body composition in adults and children. Since MUAC increases little between the age of 6 months and 5 years, it can be used in preschool children as an age-independent screening tool for severe malnutrition.

CONT

Jobe's Test. The arm is held in the scapular plane, not directly in front or out to the side, but at a comfortable angle, as if pouring out a can of pop(about 30 degrees from full extension). If holding the pouring position is painful it is because the greater tuberosity is being driven up against the acromion, a positive Jobe's test for impingement. At the same time, since this is a position of strength, push down on the arm to test for any weakness.

DEF

CONT

In the horse, dog, and ox, the suprascapular nerve travels between the subscapularis and supraspinatus muscles. It emerges over the cranial border of the neck of the scapula and courses caudolaterally toward the infraspinatus muscle. In all species, the suprascapular nerve innervates the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles; no cutaneous zone has been identified. In the horse, the nerve is not protected by an acromion and thus is susceptible to injury by compression against the edge of the scapula.

A region of the shoulder that is bordered by the so-called subacromial joint-a joint made up by the humerus and a superior arch, consisting of the acromion process and the coracoid process of the scapula, joined by the coraco-acromial ligament. This arch is lined by the synovium of the subacromial bursa. In the subacromial space runs the rotator cuff.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Tendinitis of the rotator cuff is the major cause of a painful shoulder. Of the tendons forming the rotator cuff, the supraspinatus tendon is most often affected, probably because of its repeated impingement between the acromion and humeral head as well as its reduced blood supply occurring with abduction of the arm.

OBS

Musculus supraspinatus ... A muscle of the scapula that arises from the medial two thirds of the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and the supraspinous fascia. It is inserted onto the highest of three facets on the greater tubercle of the humerus ... it helps to initiate abduction of the arm and helps to steady the head of the humerous and to prevent downward sliding in the glenoid cavity ...

CONT
