Paints consisting of copolymers designed to be smoothed via erosion of their surface as the vessel moves through the water, continually exposing smooth, fresh paint.

CONT

Self-polishing copolymer (SPC) antifoulings release biocides via a hydrolysis reaction of an acrylic polymer with seawater. This is a chemical reaction and only occurs at the surface of the coating. SPC technology combines controlled polishing rate and optimum biocide release with inherent self-smoothing for hull roughness control and maximum fuel efficiency.

"Controlled solubility copolymers" or "self-polishing copolymers(SPC) "are modern coatings in which, initially for TBT [tributyltin] paints, the biocide was chemically part of the paint matrix or resin, for example the copolymer tributylin methacrylate. When immersed, hydrolysis caused the copolymer to cleave, or hydrolyse, splitting the copolymer into a TBT(the biocide) and an acrylate(the resin) component. The TBT then released and acted as a biocide, the acrylate dissolved to ablate the paint. TBT-free SPCs have now been developed which use copper, zinc or silyl acrylate copolymers.

In the clear resin film tests of the zinc acrylate copolymer, molecular weight did not greatly affect the dissolution rate... As expected from the dissolution rate of the copolymer itself, anti-fouling paints formulated with various zinc acrylate copolymers were found to have erosion rates mainly dependent on function group concentration and hydrophilicity of the resin polymer... The surface profile of the zinc acrylate anti-fouling, observed by laser microscopy, was also found to be similar to SPC AF [self-polishing anti-fouling] and smoother than other tin-free anti-fouling paints...

Are all metal acrylate TBT [tributyltin] free SPC antifoulings the same? No. There are two types of metal acrylate antifoulings. The first type are the copper acrylate ... systems. The second type are the zinc acrylate systems. Although the biocides used in these two antifouling systems are essentially the same with the predominant biocide in both systems being copper oxide, copper complexes are more tightly bound and stable in seawater than zinc complexes. In the presence of the copper oxide biocide, zinc acrylate systems (in our experience) may undergo chemical exchange reactions with the copper oxide biocide. Copper acrylate systems do not undergo this exchange. The stability, longevity and performance of the copper acrylate ... systems can therefore be expected to be greater than that of typical zinc acrylate deep sea systems.

A texture analyzer was employed to study the properties of hairspray resins by measuring a number of mechanical parameters of hair modified by them. Hairset stiffness, stiffness retention at high humidity, and duration and magnitude of polymer film tackiness during drying were the properties employed to characterize fixative-treated hair. They were investigated for formulations containing ethyl ester of PVM/MA copolymer, butyl ester of PVM/MA copolymer, vinyl caprolactam/PVP/dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer, VA/butyl maleate/isobornyl acrylate copolymer, and polymer blends such as poly(methylvinylether)(PMVE)-ethyl ester of PVM/MA copolymer.

Omnirez [trademark] 2000 Polymer is a new Ethyl Ester of PVM/MA copolymer developed to meet the challenges of today’s hair fixative industry. It is soluble in 55% VOC systems and anhydrous products.
