Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

At particular temperature and pressure, state of moist air whose mixing ratio is such that the moist air can co-exist in neutral equilibrium with an associated condensed phase (liquid or solid) at the same temperature and pressure, the surface of separation being plane.

OBS

Usage has provided two closely related but importantly different conceptions of the term saturation(a) One is the condition in which the vapor pressure exerted by water vapor is equal to the saturation vapor pressure at the prevailing temperature. This definition implies the presence of a plane surface of pure liquid water or ice, and thus is a condition dependent upon the temperature only, irrespective of actual environment. Since, in nature, such a "plane surface of pure water" is rarely found and the physico-chemical environment of water vapor is anything but constant, this strict concept of saturation can be very misleading with regard to actual condensation processes; but the conservative base which this definition supplies is required as a comparison standard(as for relative humidity measurements). More specific terminology is often advisedly used, like "saturation with respect to water" or "saturation with respect to ice".(b) The other is the condition in which the vapor pressure of water vapor is equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure under the existing environmental conditions(temperature; and shape, size and composition of adjacent matter)... It should be clear that saturation should always be defined "with respect to" an intended environment, either standard(as in a above) or actual.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

DEF

... measure of the growth and development of plants and insects during the growing season.

CONT

Growing Degree Days. The underlying idea is that development does not occur unless the temperature exceeds a certain minimum threshold value or base temperature. The base temperatures are determined through research and experimentation and are different for different organisms. It has been found that there are many other factors, which may influence the actual temperature the organism is experiencing or that may influence their growth and development. For instance it is possible that the organism may be experiencing a temperature a few degrees more or lesser than that recorded depending on weather it spends most of its time in the shade or under direct sunlight. Precipitation and the presence of weeds may also indirectly influence the growth and development of insects and plants. The fertility and nutrient content of the soil is directly related to the growth rate of insects and plants. In light of these many factors and some other scientific considerations a base temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit is considered acceptable for all plants and insects.

Application of the Personnel Transfer Price Liability : According to the TB [Treasury Board] Manager's Guide to Operating Budgets, when managers transfer funds from other operating expenditures to salary and wages, for example to hire additional staff, they must set aside a Transfer Price of 20 percent of the actual salary. Conversely, if managers reduce the salary base by reallocating a portion to operating expenditures, they are entitled to a credit of 20 percent. The Transfer Price Adjustment ensures that managers recognize and compensate for personnel costs that are not within their budget allocation.

Hexapod is a support facility to be mounted on an EXPA of the ISS. The facility will be used for the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III(SAGE III). The facility has a bottom plate and a top plate. The two plates are connected by 6 linear actuators. Hexapod receives the pointing data from SAGE III and the actual base position from the ISS-EXPA. From this data the HEXAPOD control algorithm calculates the next position for each leg. Each linear actuator is driven by a double winding Brushless DC Motor, while the position is monitored by an incremental encoder. To sustain the launch load a launch support structure has been designed, which is released by dedicated electromechanical devices. Hexapod is controlled by a dedicated electronic unit... which interfaces to the Station via the MIL BUS 1553B.
