DEF

[An echo] received from a contact at an actual range greater than the radar range setting.

CONT

If an echo from a distant target is received after the following pulse has been transmitted, the echo will appear on the radarscope at the correct bearing but not at the true range. Second-trace echoes are unusual, except under abnormal atmospheric conditions, or conditions under which super-refraction is present.

DEF

A technique for investigating sliding wear.

OBS

[The] apparatus [used to conduct such an experiment] consists essentially of a "pin" in contact with a rotating disc. Either the pin or the disc can be the test piece of interest. The contact surface of the pin may be flat, spherical, or, indeed, of any convenient geometry, including that of actual wear components. In a typical pin-on-disc experiment, the coefficient of friction is continuously monitored as wear occurs, and the material removed is determined by weighing and/or measuring the profile of the resulting wear track.

DEF

DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

DEF

The gathering and recording of information [(spectral, spatial, temporal) ] without actual contact with the object or area [or phenomenon] being investigated, [on the basis of measurements taken at some distance from it].

CONT

Types [of remote sensing]: 1. In respect to the type of energy resources: passive remote sensing ... makes use of sensors that detect the reflected or emitted electro-magnetic radiation from natural sources. Active remote sensing ... makes use of sensors that detect reflected responses from objects that are irradiated from artificially-generated energy sources, such as radar.

OBS

In practice the term [remote sensing] is normally used to describe the collection and analysis of data made by instruments carried in or above the Earth’s atmosphere.

OBS

While devices which sense gravity, magnetic fields or sound waves can properly be classified as remote sensors, many authors restrict their use of the term remote sensing to describe measurements of electromagnetic radiation.
