Colloidal silica set into a rigid gel which resembles coarse white sand, is made by coagulation of hydrated silica, possesses many fine pores, is capable of absorbing moisture from the air, and is used as a selective adsorbent, a drying agent and as a catalyst or catalyst carrier.

... opal-A is precipitated on filamentous bacteria, and in open spaces in chimneys, as a silica gel.

OBS

The gel itself is colourless but, when used in desiccators, etc., a blue cobalt salt is added. As moisture is taken up, the salt turns pink, indicating that the gel needs to be regenerated (by heating).

Le gel de silice est d'un emploi très général et convient bien à la fixation des substances polaires, mais retient fortement les composés à l'étuve à 150 ou 200 °C avant d'être utilisé. Ses sites acides pourront être partiellement masqués en le traitant par une base, soude ou potasse, ou en incorporant aux éluants de petites proportions d'amines ou d'ammoniaque.

La silice colloïdale, lorsqu'elle prend en gel, le fait avec une très grande rapidité, emprisonnant des organismes vivants ou encore pourvus d'une partie de leur substance molle. [...] C'est dans un gisement de silice colloïdale que nous connaissons le mieux les Ptérobranches et les Graptolithes du Trémadoc.

La gamme de gels à base de silice : SpherosilMC (gel d'adsorption et d'échange d'ions) sont des supports utilisés dans l'industrie [de la biologie] pour les purifications à grande échelle de l'insuline, de dérivés sanguins, d'anticorps monoclonaux.

Chromatography in which the stationary phase is a thin layer of adsorbent gel coated on a glass or plastic plate. The sample is applied in a small spot at the base of the plate, and the plate is made to stand on edge in a solvent. As the solvent rises in the gel by capillary action, the sample components move at different rates and are separated into different spots. The plate is removed from the solvent, dried, and stained to visualize the components.

Elle est particulièrement indiquée comme technique d'essai, ses résultats s'extrapolant immédiatement à la technique en colonne puisqu'on utilise les mêmes phases fixes et les mêmes solvants.
