1, record 13, French, - Programme%20de%20protection%20respiratoire

In 1983, physicians at National Jewish reported a new condition that may mimic asthma. This condition is called Vocal Cord Dysfunction, or VCD. VCD causes asthma-like symptoms because of an abnormal closing of the vocal cords. VCD can cause difficulty breathing and even wheezing. Based on these symptoms, many people with VCD may be diagnosed with asthma and treated with asthma medications, including oral steroids... Common symptoms include a chronic cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, throat tightness, "difficulty getting air in", hoarseness and wheezing... A specific breathing test called a flow volume loop, can be helpful in showing VCD, especially on the "breathing in" or inspiratory part of the loop. 1, record 21, English, - vocal%20cord%20dysfunction

When a job requires breathing compressed air, as in diving or caisson work, oxygen deficiency(hypoxia) is rarely a problem, as the body will be exposed to an increasing amount of oxygen as the absolute pressure rises. [...] Decompression schedules for hyperbaric chamber attendants can be based on naval air decompression schedules, but since exposures are so frequent and thus are usually at the limits of the table, they must be liberally lengthened and oxygen should be substituted for compressed-air breathing during decompression. 1, record 30, English, - hyperbaric%20chamber%20attendant

The permissible limit for inhalation of a radionuclide is the appropriate ALI [annual limit of intake]. This is given in units of activity, Bq. Because it is often easier to measure and control the concentration of radioactvity in the air than to measure or control the intake, the ALIs are used to calculate the Derived Air Concentrations(DACs). The Derived Air Concentration, or DAC for any radionuclide, is that concentration in air, expressed in Bq/m³ which, if worked in for a year(50 weeks of 40 hours each for a total of 2000 hours per year), would result in the ALI for inhalation. The normal breathing rate, based on Reference Man, is 2, 400 m³ per year at work. The Derived Air Concentration is the ALI divided by the volume breathed in a year at work. 4, record 31, English, - derived%20air%20concentration

Diving Apparatus. Any equipment to enable a person to spend time underwater. Diving bells were in regular use in the 17th century, the diver breathing air trapped in a bell-shaped chamber. This was followed by cumbersome diving suits in the early 19th century. Complete freedom of movement came with the aqualung, invented by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in the early 1940s. For work at greater depths the technique of saturation diving was developed in the 1970s in which divers live for a week or more breathing a mixture of helium and oxygen at the pressure existing on the seabed where they work(as in work on North Sea platforms and tunnel building). 3, record 32, English, - diving%20apparatus

3, record 32, French, - scaphandre

A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer's lung power to pull air through a filter. Closed circuit SCBA... Compressed or liquid oxygen type. Equipped with a facepiece or mouthpiece and nose clamp. High-pressure oxygen from a gas cylinder passes through a high-pressure reducing valve and, in some designs, through a low-pressure admission valve to a breathing bag or container. Liquid oxygen is converted to low-pressure gaseous oxygen and delivered to the breathing bag. The wearer inhales from the bag, through a corrugated tube connected to a mouthpiece or facepiece and a one-way check valve. Exhaled air passes through another check valve and tube into a container of carbon-dioxide removing chemical and reenters the breathing bag. Make-up oxygen enters the bag continuously or as the bag deflates sufficiently to actuate an admission valve. 2, record 56, English, - breathing%20bag

Some cleaning methods may create large amounts of spray... If this cannot be avoided and particularly if cleaning is done in confined spaces, then personnel should wear air line or self-contained breathing apparatus(SCBA) unless it is not safe or practicable to do so. This is recommended as filter respiratory protective equipment has not been specifically tested for use against aerosols containing Legionella. Other ways to reduce the risk to maintenance personnel include decontamination and routine cleaning of cooling towers by chlorination of the tower water prior to any physical cleaning being undertaken. 1, record 57, English, - tower%20water

Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators. Mechanical filter respirators are used for protection against airborne particulate matter such as dusts, mists, fumes, smoke, etc. Cartridge respirators are used for protection against gases and vapours. These respirators rely on the use of activated charcoal or chemical-treated sorbents to remove the gases and/or vapours. Where both particulate and gaseous contaminants co-exist, a combination of a chemical cartridge and mechanical filter is required. 3, record 66, English, - combination%20respirator

Supplied-air respirators provide breathable air from an outside source and protect against very toxic particulates and gases at high concentrations. They have a compressed air source and an air hose connecting the air source to the breathing mask. The respirators may have half facepieces, full facepieces, hoods or helmets and the oxygen is supplied by pressure demand or continuous flow. 3, record 68, English, - continuous%20flow

4, record 69, English, - mechanical%20filter%20respirator

1, record 73, French, - respiration%20%C3%A0%20deux

A device which regulates the flow of gas from a high pressure source in response to a reduction of pressure at its outlet. In aircraft breathing systems the gas is either oxygen or a mixture of air and oxygen and the flow from the regulator to the face masks is controlled by the pressure fluctuations in the mask produced by breathing. The flow of gas from a demand regulator matches the instantaneous inspiratory flow of the user. 1, record 74, English, - demand%20oxygen%20regulator

1, record 74, French, - r%C3%A9gulateur%20d%27oxyg%C3%A8ne%20%C3%A0%20la%20demande
