AIR BRIDGE [13 records]

Record 1 2023-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

The Solid State Power Control Module(SSPCM) delivers 120 volts DC [Direct Current] from the Station to the racks and converts it to 28 volts DC, and delivers that power to a three-outlet power strip for use by the payloads. The SSPCM sends 120 volts DC to the RIC [Rack Interface Controller], the AAA [Avionics Air Assembly], and the PEHB [Payload Ethernet Hub/Bridge]. The SSPCM also provides data interfaces for payloads, including analog(two for each middeck locker and one for each ISIS [International Subrack Interface Standard] drawer) and bidirectional discrete(three for each middeck locker and two for each ISIS drawer).

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Defence Planning and Military Doctrine
CONT

... lack of theatre-level support structures, an almost complete reliance on a tenuous air bridge for sustainment, deployment to an austere environment and the operation within a multinational context where common supply sourcing was nonexistent, posed a unique set of problems that required a very non-traditional approach.

CONT

CONT

The wire [of suspension bridge] is delivered to the site in reels, from which loops are carried over the tops of the towers to the far anchorage, where each loop is pulled off the sheave and placed around a strand shoe, by which it is anchored.

CONT

The use of a strand shoe anchorage is restricted to cables erected in situ, and so this detail is found only at the anchorage of suspension bridge main cables erected by the air spinning method.

CONT

The four main cables are composed of parallel wires carried back and forth across the river, each containing 61 strands of 434 individual wires. Each strand wraps around a strand shoe in the anchorage. Each shoe connects to an eyebar which penetrates into the anchorage and holds the strand in place.

DEF

Anemometer used for measuring wind speed from the variations either in temperature or in resistance of a metal wire which is heated by an electric current and loses more heat as the wind increases.

CONT

Hot-wire anemometer... is an important device used principally in research on air turbulence and boundary layers. There are two types, known as constant-voltage and constant-temperature. The cooling of an electrically heated fine wire placed in a gas stream which alters wire resistance depends on the fluid velocity. With the constant-voltage type, as soon as the gas starts flowing, the hot wire cools off, the voltage across a Wheatstone bridge connected to the wire is kept constant, and the calibrated galvanometer shows a reading related to the velocity.

DEF

CONT

In thermal conductivity analysers, a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit measures the imbalance caused by passing gas over detector filaments, using half of the cells for the fumigant air mixture and the other half for air as a control. This analyser, in a portable form, is commonly used to check for methyl bromide in ship holds, but it can also be calibrated for other gases. It will not differentiate between fumigants if mixtures are used.

CONT
