AIR BUOYANCY [28 records]

Record 1 2025-11-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Building Ventilation
  • Architecture
CONT

Passive ventilation is a method by which no forced air is used, like in a fan. Instead, passive ventilation systems utilize the wind along with rising heat force, called heat buoyancy or convection, to properly ventilate an area.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Ventilation (Construction)
  • Architecture
CONT

La ventilation passive exploite les forces naturelles telles que le vent et les différences de pression pour créer un flux d'air. Des évents d'entrée et de sortie stratégiquement placés favorisent la circulation naturelle de l'air.

Subject field(s)
  • Maneuvering of Ships
  • Safety (Water Transport)
CONT

Ships may capsize and sink in water that is deeper than the beam of the ship. The sunken ship becomes an underwater obstruction and hazard to maritime traffic. Water depth around and over the ship at high water determines the extent and seriousness of the hazard and the urgency of removal. Refloating the ship upside down is sometimes suitable in such cases.... The refloated ship is to be scuttled in deep water, scrapped in a drydock, or taken to a location that can accept the upsidedown ship. Ships are refloated upside down by restoring their buoyancy with compressed air.

DEF

The ratio of lateral entrainment velocity to plume-rise velocity of a smoke plume.

CONT

Smoke plumes that rise through the environment due to buoyancy or momentum become diluted with environmental air, where the rate of dilution is proportional to the rise rate of the plume. The entrainment coefficient is this constant of proportionality. This concept of lateral entrainment does not work well for convective thermals in the atmospheric boundary layer. One reason is that boundary layer thermals are part of a large overturning circulation involving the whole boundary layer during statically unstable conditions of free convection, rather than being thin currents of rising smokestack air.

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation.

OBS

Hood designs can be placed into three broad categories based on the methods used to capture contaminants: exterior hoods, receiving hoods, and exhaust enclosures.

Air-filled cavities that make up part of a bird's respiratory system, located under the skin between the internal organs and muscles as well as inside the bones. Air sacs are essential in respiration, are used to control buoyancy in aquatic species and play a role in thermoregulation. Their presence in the bones lightens the bird and facilitates flight.

CONT

Air sacs of birds. These are large bags acting as air-reservoirs connected to the lungs and to the cavities of the bones. During respiration the compression and expansion of these sacs causes air to be swept rapidly through the alveoli of the lungs. There is thus a very efficient respiratory exchange.

The distinction should now be well apparent between Bénard-Marangoni convection driven by surface tension effects and Rayleigh-Bénard convection resulting from buoyancy. Determination of the airtightness of building envelopes by the fan depressurization method.... This is a method for the determination of the airtightness of building envelopes. It is not a method for determining the actual air leakage which occurs through a building envelope under the influence of wind and buoyancy pressures or the operation of heating and ventilation systems.... Principle. A fan or fans are used to exhaust air from the building at rates required to maintain specified pressure differences across the building envelope. The air flows and the pressure differences are measured. The intention is to subject the complete envelope to a simultaneous and similarly directed air pressure. The flows are corrected to reference temperature and reference pressure. The relationship between flow and pressure difference is used to calculate the equivalent leakage area of the building envelope.
