AIR CAPACITOR [3 records]

Record 1 2017-06-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrical Engineering
DEF

[A] capacitor which uses air as the dielectric medium located between conductive plates.

OBS

[Air capacitors are] used especially for tuning radio-frequency circuits.

OBS

air capacitor : term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee(New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électrotechnique
CONT

DEF

A method of electrophotography that records the luminous glow produced when a high-voltage, high-frequency electric potential is applied across a subject.

OBS

While the phenomenon has frequently been adopted and displayed as a mystical or psychic "aura, "the basic physical principles have been investigated... When a high-voltage charge is applied across electrodes arranged much like a large capacitor, a corona discharge can occur in the air space between. This discharge occurs well before high-current density will cause a spark to jump the gap. Corona discharge causes a luminous glow that can be observed and photographed either with a camera and film or with the film alone exposed directly by contact or close proximity to an object.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Motors
CONT

The vast majority of small shaft-mounted fan and blower motors utilize the air from the fan to cool the motor. They are generally of a totally enclosed construction, and are usually split-phase or capacitor start and run motors up to about 500 W. Small shaded-pole motors are also common. Three-phase cage motors are used above about 100 W.
