So, if condensation is taking place, latent heat is being released to the surrounding air. So you have two opposing trends going on at the same time within this parcel of air. It’s rising and cooling, but it’s also condensing and being warmed. Which one will win out? That is, will the air get colder, or will it get warmer? Well, what happens is that the air will still cool off, but not as fast. If water vapor in the air is condensing, the adiabatic rate is less. The air is only cooling off at a rate of about 5 degrees C/1000 meters (3.3 deg per 1000 feet). This is called the Saturated adiabatic lapse rate (or the wet adiabatic lapse rate, or the moist adiabatic lapse rate, depending on the textbook you are using). The saturated lapse rate varies with the original temperature of the air parcel, but 5 degrees C/1000 meters is a commonly used value. 6, record 1, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate

The pseudoadiabatic lapse rate is so close to the moist adiabatic lapse rate that meteorologists tend to ignore this difference and often refer to them synonymously. In fact, on adiabatic charts (or pseudoadiabatic charts), the moist adiabatic lapse rate lines are referred to interchangeably as moist, saturated, or pseudoadiabatic. 7, record 1, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate

Since alteration means change, change in the environment is synonymous with alteration. In this case, it is a change for the worse. Often the effects of alteration are neither immediately discernible nor accurately predictable. Who can foresee what will happen to a 1970 American baby who is born in an air-conditioned hospital, taken home in an air-conditioned car, reared in an air-conditioned apartment, schooled in an air-conditioned school and amused by recreational activities in an air-conditioned bubble? This unnatural alteration of normal rises and falls in daily temperature may result in eventual genetic changes. And what alteration is being wrought on the urban atmosphere during the summer while hundreds of thousands of air-conditioned apartments and homes pump their waste heat out into the atmosphere and the occupants undergo alteration of temperature and humidity inside? Undesirable levels of pollutants-toxic and otherwise-of course cause alteration of air, water and soil. 1, record 25, English, - change%20in%20the%20environment

A ram air turbine(RAT) is a small turbine and connected hydraulic pump, or electrical generator used as power source for aircraft. In some early aircraft, these were permanently mounted and were the aircraft's principal electrical power source. With the exception of crop dusters, modern aircraft only use RATs for emergency use-in case of the loss of both primary and auxiliary power sources the RAT will power vital systems(flight controls, linked hydraulics and also flight-critical instrumentation). Some RATs produce only hydraulic power, that is then used to power electrical Generators. 3, record 28, English, - ram%20air%20turbine

Functional Air Conditioning. Air conditioning for functional(i. e. scientific and technical) requirements is to be limited to those instances where there is a clear case for the control of temperature and/or humidity and where this can not be achieved by passive thermal control, such as shading and insulation. Computer rooms, rare book library stacks, rooms housing specialised equipment, animal houses, metrology and measurement laboratories and museums are examples of areas that may require air conditioning owing to function. 1, record 35, English, - functional%20air%20conditioning

Far noise field of air jets and jet engines. An experimental investigation was conducted to study and compare the acoustic radiation of air jets and jet engines. A number of different nozzle-exit shapes were studied with air jets to determine the effect of exit shape on noise generation. Circular, square, rectangular, and elliptical convergent nozzles and convergent-divergent and plug nozzles were investigated. The spectral distributions of the sound power for the engine and the air jet were in good agreement for the case where the engine data were not greatly affected by reflection or jet interference effects. Such power spectra for a subsonic or slightly choked engine or air jet show that the peaks of the spectra occur at a Strouhal number of 0. 3. 2, record 37, English, - far%20noise%20field

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is injected into a small prechamber which is connected to the cylinder by a narrow opening. The initial combustion takes place in this prechamber. This has the effect of slowing the rate of combustion, which tends to reduce audible noise. In a direct injection diesel engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The piston incorporates a depression(often toroidal) which is where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient than indirect injection engines, but have a tendency to produce greater amounts of audible noise. In either case the location where combustion takes place, called a swirl chamber, is carefully designed to ensure adequate mixing of the atomized fuel with the compression-heated air. 4, record 45, English, - direct%2Dinjection%20diesel%20engine

Crib-biting and wind-sucking are different varieties of the same vice, which are learned chiefly by young horses. In each case the horse swallows air... Air is swallowed by firmly closing the mouth, arching the neck, and gulping down air.... Accompanying each swallowing effort there is usually a distinct grunt. 4, record 48, English, - cribbing

3, record 48, French, - tic%20%C3%A0%20l%27appui

The circumference of the rotor is machined with dozens of little bucket-like cutouts which allow the airflow to spin the rotor like a waterwheel(but a whole lot faster). The directional gyroscope forms a standard reference for the pilot and navigator. It is a three-frame gyroscope with its spin axis in the horizontal plane. The source of power for the gyro is the engine-driven vacuum pump(or venturi) which sucks air from the rear of the instrument case. 1, record 60, French, - anneau%20vertical

Although the Canadian Forces form a single and integrated force, they can hardly be called integrated in any operational sense. The land forces are not specifically trained to operate primarily in conjunction with Canada's sea and air forces as are, for example, the United States Marines. Were that the case, the structural, command and equipment needs of the Canadian Forces would be considerably different than they are now. The air force, for example, would set aside the air superiority role(presumably leaving that role to an allied air force) and concentrate on the fighter-bomber, air-to-ground, role. 1, record 61, English, - air%20superiority%20role

The determination of radiation dose is a two-part process. First, a measurement is made, using, for instance, a dosimeter, a urine specimen or an air sample. Second, this measurement is used in a "dosimetric model" to calculate the dose, usually the effective dose or a conservative estimate of this quantity. Dosimetric models may be simple, as in the case of external gamma exposure, where a dosimeter reading is converted to dose by means of a simple conversion factor. For bioassay, however, the conversion of a urine measurement to a dose requires knowledge of the metabolism of the radionuclide, the time and route of intake, and several other factors. 1, record 62, English, - dosimetric%20model

The least desirable flow condition is one that causes spin or swirl to develop in the airstream at the fan inlet. Inlet swirl, or vorticity, is a frequent cause of reduction in fan performance. If the spin is imparted in the direction of wheel rotation, a situation corresponding to the use of inlet vanes arises : the fan volume, pressure, and horsepower are lower than expected. If the air spin is counter to wheel rotation, the volume and static pressure will be greater than expected and the brake horsepower will also be greater. In either case, spin always reduces efficiency. These conditions are readily overcome by installing vanes and a splitter at the fan inlet... 3, record 65, English, - turning%20vanes

A cooling tower basically consists of an air circuit and a water circuit leading to a heat exchange vessel in which the air and water are brought into contact. By a stack effect, i. e. by natural draft, the cooling tower shell provides air circulation. When, as is the case with the wet cooling towers at EDF thermal and nuclear plants, the air and water are placed in direct contact in the heat exchange vessel, the hot air escaping from the shell is saturated with steam : mixing with the colder outside air produces by steam condensation a plume whose structure is similar to a natural cloud. 1, record 77, English, - wet%20cooling%20tower

Air is swallowed by firmly closing the mouth, arching the neck, and gulping down air.... Accompanying each swallowing effort there is usually a distinct grunt. Crib-biting and wind-sucking are different varieties of the same vice, which are learned chiefly by young horses. In each case the horse swallows air. A ’crib-biter’ effects this by grasping the edge of the manger or some other convenient fixture with the incisor teeth; it then raises the floor of the mouth; the soft palate is forced open; a swallowing movement occurs; and a gulp of air is passed down the gullet into the stomach. A ’wind-sucker’ achieves the same end, but it does not require a resting-place for the teeth.... Some horses which have been crib-biters learn to wind-suck when remedial measures are taken, and there are some wind-suckers which learn to crib-bite. 2, record 83, English, - crib

Air release chambers are installed ahead of any metering equipment to ensure accurate measurement of fuel flow. They may be installed in either the pumphouse or on the dispensing platform. They operate on the reduced flow velocity principle which separates and eliminates air from the fuel. As the fuel enters the air release chamber(the diameter of which is much greater than the diameter of the inlet to the air release body), the velocity of the flow is greatly reduced allowing an interval of time for the air to separate from the fuel. The air, being lighter than the liquid, rises to the top of the chamber, where it remains until a sufficient quantity has accumulated to lower the liquid level, causing the float to drop, which in turn opens the vent valve and allows the accumulated air to escape. In most cases the line from the air vent is returned to the storage or scavenger tank to prevent spraying fuel into the surrounding area in case of a malfunction of the air release chamber. 1, record 87, English, - air%20release%20chamber

1, record 87, French, - chambre%20de%20d%C3%A9sa%C3%A9ration

In the production of filament non-wovens use can be made of yarn from a creel filled with spools of untwisted yarn, produced in a separate process, or of yarns spun and possibly drawn on the integrated non-woven machine. In the latter case a spun-bonded non-woven is produced. The drawn bundles of filaments are spread by air transport systems and laid down in layers on a conveyor belt. Thus an unbonded non-woven is formed, which is often held in place by suction through the conveyor belt. The non-woven is then bonded. 1, record 92, English, - spun%2Dbonded%20non%2Dwoven

The hollow spike belt consists of two rows of hollow spikes inserted in 4-ply, woven rubber belting with segmented metal back plating. The spikes are case hardened, the tips of which are ground to a fifteen degree angle and then teflon coated to allow easier penetration. Simply unroll it across the highway in the suspect vehicle's path. When the vehicle passes over the spikes, they penetrate the front tires, break loose from the belt and cause air to escape. 1, record 93, English, - hollow%20spike%20belt

Mine roadways offer resistance to air flow due mainly by surface drag between air and roadway sides(...) Energy losses are directly proportional to the cube of the air quantity flowing. A simpler pressure difference relationship is used which is derived from basic fluid flow principles and which can be related to Atkinson's equation. In this case P=RQ [squared] where P is the frictional pressure difference across a length of roadway in pascals : R is the roadway resistance in Gauls(...) ;and Q the air-flow rate in [cub metre]/s. Roadway resistances are expressed in Gauls per 100 m of airway(...) 1, record 100, English, - Gaul
