AIR CELL [36 records]

Record 1 2026-01-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
DEF

A katabatic wind, it is formed at night by the radiational cooling along mountainsides.

CONT

... at night the air in contact with the mountain is cooler than farther from the land mass and so the cooler air sinks along the slope producing the mountain breeze.

CONT

mountain breeze ... As the slopes become colder than the surrounding atmosphere, the lower levels of air cool and drain to the lowest point of the terrain. It may reach several hundred feet in depth, and extreme cases, attain speeds of 50 knots or greater. It blows in the opposite direction of a valley breeze.

CONT

During the night, the air along the mountain slopes begins to cool quickly because of longwave radiation loss... As the air cools, it becomes more dense and begins to flow downslope causing a mountain breeze. Convergence of the draining air occurs at the valley floor and forces the air to move vertically upward. The upward movement is usually limited by the presence of a temperature inversion which forces the air to begin moving horizontally. This horizontal movement completes the circulation cell system. In narrowing terrain, mountain winds can accelerate in speed because of the venturi effect. Such winds can attain speeds as high has 150 kilometers per hour.

Subject field(s)
  • Pulp Preparation (papermaking)
OBS

At the heart of the flotation process is the flotation cell, of which several designs are available. Here, air in the form of small bubbles is blended with the grey stock. The air bubbles become attached to ink and dirt particles, causing them to rise to the surface of the cell where they are removed as a dirt-laden layer of froth. Typically, 6 to 10 flotation cells in series are required for efficient ink removal depending on the level of dirt in the stock.

Domaine(s)
  • Préparation de la pâte à papier
OBS

The rotor is mounted at each end on hollow shafts extending out of the cell at each end through packing glands or through specially designed gland eliminators. Low-pressure air is introduced through the shaft at either end, or, for better control of aeration in various parts of the cell, the rotor may be divided into two sections and air introduced at both ends. The rotor is fitted with two longitudinal angle-iron scraper bars, which prevent settling and accumulation below it and thus protect the mat. The pulp enters at one end and is subjected to thorough aeration in passing through the machine. Froth overflows the sides, and tailings are discharged at the end by means of an adjustable weir overflow.

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric).

While the simple blast cell is the most prolific technology today for freezing bulk materials, processors are investigating other forms of inexpensive freezing that can drop temperature quickly and flexibly. Plate freezing and continuous belt freezing are two examples. In plate freezing, the product is generally placed in a leak-proof bag, although in some cases direct contact is used, and then compressed between two plates that are held at-40°F. Freezing times of just a few hours are possible, depending on the thickness of the product. Continuous freezing belt systems are similar to a blast cell in terms of air flow and temperature, with the primary difference being that instead of staging palletized product, boxed product moves on a slow conveyor belt within an enclosure. This allows differently shaped and sized boxes to be loaded simultaneously and usually requires a 24-hour dwell time to reach zero. It is a bit slower than plate freezing, but with more product flexibility.

In a direct hydrogen fuel cell..., hydrogen from the fuel tank is supplied to the fuel cells, where it combines with oxygen from an air compressor. An electrode coated with a catalyst splits the hydrogen into electrons and protons. The movement of the electrons generates electricity, which is sent to the traction inverter module. The traction inverter module converts the electricity for use by the motor/transaxle, which transforms the electric energy into the mechanical energy that turns the wheels. Amorphous silicon solar cells having the following characteristics will be produced by 1987 :(1) stable pin multijunction cells with a 12%-13% air mass(AM) I intrinsic efficiency that is stable to within 10% after 20 years of continuous operation and at least 10 cm x 10 cm in area;(2) an interconnected single-junction cell module of at least 7%-8% AMI efficiency and at least 40 cm x 30 cm in area.

CONT

Usually a-Si solar cells are constructed on flat substrates with smooth mirror-like surfaces, such as stainless steel plate made by electrical and mechanical polishing.

OBS

The term "amorphous silicon solar cell" has been taken from "Canadian Solar Energy Review", by J.P. Rollefson (National Research Council of Canada).

Grate fired combustors. Grate-fired systems include both pile burners and spreader-stokers. Pile burners include the old-fashioned Dutch ovens(or Dietrich cells for bagasse and coffee grounds), Wellons cells, Lanb-Cargate wet cell or gasifier burners, and inclined grate systems. Spreader-stokers are distinguished by their feed mechanism, typically a windswept or pneumatic spout or paddle wheel located above the grate and the thin bed of fuel on the grate. The stoker mechanism spreads the fuel more or less uniformly across the grate. Grate fired systems may use flat or sloping grates, with inclined grates being the most severely sloping grate systems. Grates may be stationary or moving. They may be air cooled or water cooled. Ash removal from grates may be accomplished by moving arms, steam or air blowing systems, grate moving, or hand raking. Grate fired units may be refractory lined or waterwall furnaces, depending upon vendor and purpose.

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses.
