When an air passage is irritated(like from smoking or infection), the cells lining it can change from being like rectangles standing up next to each other, to being flatter and stacked on top of each other. This change is called squamous metaplasia because the cells now look like the type of cells called squamous cells. When the irritation disappears, for example when you stop smoking or the infection clears, the lining cells return to their normal appearance. Squamous metaplasia is not considered a pre-cancer, but if the irritation persists it can progress to squamous dysplasia. 3, record 6, English, - squamous%20metaplasia

Any perceivable change undergone by a food, through any cause, that renders it unwholesome or unacceptable for use. Spoilage is usually the result of enzyme or microbial action resulting, for example, in lipolytic rancidity, putrefaction, fermentation, or mould growth; but food can also spoil by other means, for example overlong storage, non-enzymic browning, or exposure to air or light. Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave's voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 40, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

Since alteration means change, change in the environment is synonymous with alteration. In this case, it is a change for the worse. Often the effects of alteration are neither immediately discernible nor accurately predictable. Who can foresee what will happen to a 1970 American baby who is born in an air-conditioned hospital, taken home in an air-conditioned car, reared in an air-conditioned apartment, schooled in an air-conditioned school and amused by recreational activities in an air-conditioned bubble? This unnatural alteration of normal rises and falls in daily temperature may result in eventual genetic changes. And what alteration is being wrought on the urban atmosphere during the summer while hundreds of thousands of air-conditioned apartments and homes pump their waste heat out into the atmosphere and the occupants undergo alteration of temperature and humidity inside? Undesirable levels of pollutants-toxic and otherwise-of course cause alteration of air, water and soil. 1, record 44, English, - change%20in%20the%20environment

Even the seemingly small level of disagreement between surface and deep layer temperature trends can not be reproduced by current GCMís, which slave globally-averaged deep tropospheric temperatures to any surface temperature fluctuations... However, we know that convective air currents and the air-conditioning effects of water cause the atmospheric temperature profile to change by a much larger amount, about 80 deg. C, between the surface and 10 km altitude when compared to a hypothetical Earth without these processes... Thus, it is critical to validate whether the parameterizations of moist convective processes in GCMís are realistic enough to capture the ways in which the tropospheric temperature profile fluctuates naturally in response to this transport of heat from the surface to the upper troposphere. 1, record 46, English, - tropospheric%20temperature%20profile

In the homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) one assumes that the velocity, temperature and pressure between the phases or components are equal. 1, record 50, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model
Record number: 50, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This assumption is based on the belief that differences in these three potential variables(and chemical potential if chemical reactions are considered) will promote momentum, energy, and mass transfer between the phases rapidly enough so that equilibrium is reached. For example, when one phase is finely dispersed in another phase generating large interfacial area, under certain circumstances this assumption can be made; e. g., bubbly flow of air in water or steam in water at high pressures. The resulting equations resemble those for a pseudo-fluid with mixture properties and an equation of state which links the phases to obtain these mixture thermodynamic properties. Whenever the HEM model is used it is advisable to check the validity of the equilibrium assumptions by using more accurate theoretical models for comparison. For example, rapid acceleration or pressure changes cannot be always accurately modelled with the HEM model; i. e., discharge of flashing vapor-liquid mixtures, or shock wave propagation through a multiphase medium. This is especially true when the pressure change is large when compared to the ambient pressure, or any of the driving potentials are large relative to their reference values. 1, record 50, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model

The change in snow grains as the snowpack becomes wet(snow temperature reaches 0 degrees C) and subsequently refreezes is known as melt-freeze metamorphism. This process usually occurs during late winter and spring when air temperatures are high, solar radiation is high, and cycles of melting and refreezing are common. The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 63, English, - supercell%20tornado

The type of precipitation that will fall from clouds in any given storm is largely dependent on what is called the vertical temperature profile. A vertical temperature profile is a series of temperature measurements taken at various levels of the troposphere. Meteorologists send up weather balloons twice each day to detect the air temperatures at different elevations in the troposphere. During the winter months, access to temperature data reported back from weather balloons helps meteorologists to more accurately forecast what type of precipitation is on the way. fall streaks : ... falling ice crystals that evaporate before reaching the ground. 3, record 70, English, - fall%20streak
Record number: 70, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Fall streaks form when snowflakes and ice crystals fall from cirrus clouds. The change in wind with height and how quickly these ice crystals fall determine the shapes and sizes the fall streaks attain. Since ice crystals fall much more slowly than raindrops, fall streaks tend to be stretched out horizontally as well as vertically. Cirrus streaks may be nearly straight, shaped like a comma, or seemingly all tangled together. Similar to fall streaks is virga, which appears as streamers suspended in the air beneath the base of precipitating clouds. 4, record 70, English, - fall%20streak

A Fall streaks are the wisps that can sometimes be seen falling below high, thin cirrus clouds. They are ice crystals that fall out of the cloud but evaporate as they fall into drier air below. The angular momentum of a tumbling orbiting satellite is changed to reduce the spinning of the spacecraft such that the spacecraft can operate in an essentially stabilized condition. The change in spin rate is accomplished by the development of a magnetic torque by commutation of magnetic air coils in response to Earth sensor signals controlled by spacecraft logic. The coils are disposed to produce magnetic dipoles transverse to the satellite spin axis such that by interacting with the Earth's magnetic field a torque is developed in a direction opposite the spin vector. The logic selects the proper magnetic dipole based upon data from sensors detecting the presence of the Earth for the development of the desired magnetic torque. 5, record 72, English, - magnetotorquer

The dry-line is an area where the relatively dry air from the west that has passed over the Rocky Mountains and warmed by compression, butts up against and flows over very warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. This boundary may also be referred to as the dew point front because dew point temperatures can change as much as 9°C/km. This boundary can occur as far north as the Dakotas, and as far east as the Texas-Louisiana border, but are most common on the east side of the Rockies. As surface winds converge east of the dry-line, lifting occurs, leading to thunderstorm development. 2, record 80, English, - dry%20line

Toe To Heel Water Flooding : An Effective Short Distance Oil Displacement Process for Light Heavy Oil Reservoirs.... Wascana Energy Inc. and Alberta Research Council invite you to attend an information session to describe the Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding(TTHW) process.... Background With the advent of horizontal wells in Improved Oil Recovery of heavy oils, a change is taking place in the approach to improved recovery of oil. Currently, there is a move from displacing oil in a flood pattern from injector to producers over long distances(of the order of hundreds of meters) to short-distance oil displacement(SDOD) processes(typically over a few meters). Due to the high viscosity of heavy oil, the displacement to producers located long distance away tends to make waterflooding inappropriate. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, Vapor Extraction and Toe-To-Heel Displacement Processes(TTHDP) belong to the SDOD processes. TTHDP can be applied as a non-thermal recovery technology, such as Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding or as a thermal technology such as Toe-To-Heel Steamflooding and Toe-To-Heel Air Injection. More than 17 laboratory tests of Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding(TTHW) showed that this process will provide good results for lighter heavy oil reservoirs(with viscosity less than 1200 mPas). Hele Shaw model tests indicated ultimate recovery factors substantially higher for the TTHW, when compared to conventional waterflooding using vertical wells. 2, record 87, English, - toe%2Dto%2Dheel%20combustion

Using the technology of dual infrared sensors mounted inside the dash panel, Jeep's Dual-Zone Climate Control System independently measures the body surface temperature of both the driver and front passenger. By measuring the actual surface temperature of the front seat occupants, rather then the air temperature around them as most climate control systems do, the new Jeep can direct hot or cold air flow to continually meet the driver and passenger's perceived comfort level. As conditions in the vehicle change, due to exterior temperature or sunlight, the system adjusts to counter those circumstances. 2, record 90, English, - dual%2Dzone%20climate%20control

Peroxide Forming Chemicals. Materials that are susceptible to peroxide formation(i. e., autooxidation) are ones that typically react with air, moisture or impurities and produce a change in their chemical composition in normal storage. The peroxides that form are less volatile than the solvent itself and thus tend to concentrate. This is particularly dangerous if peroxides are present during a distillation, where the applied heat to the concentrated solution may trigger a violent explosion. Equally dangerous is to allow a container of this material to evaporate to dryness, leaving the crystals of peroxide at the bottom of the container. 4, record 91, English, - peroxide%20forming%20chemical

Chemicals that are sensitive to peroxide formation can be broken into three categories .... A. Peroxide hazard after prolonged storage. Form potentially explosive peroxides without concentrating. B. Chemicals which become a peroxide hazard if concentrated, such as through distillation or evaporation. Test for peroxide formation or discard after 1 year. C. Chemicals which are a hazard due to peroxide initiation of polymerization. 4, record 91, English, - peroxide%20forming%20chemical
