A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls’ orientation upward(from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column. 2, record 1, English, - mesocyclone

2, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9socyclone

The reed instruments of the orchestra are found among the woodwinds. They include the members of the clarinet family—clarinet, bass clarinet, and E-flat clarinet, which are single-reed instruments—and the members of the oboe and bassoon families—oboe, English horn, bassoon, and contrabassoon—which are double-reed instruments.(The saxophone is also a reed instrument—a single-reed.) A woodwind instrument is really just a long tube. In order for the instrument to produce a sound, something has to make the column of air inside the tube vibrate. On a reed instrument, that something is the reed : the player's breath causes the reed to vibrate, and the vibrating reed causes the column of air to vibrate. On a single-reed instrument, the reed vibrates against a mouthpiece; on a double-reed instrument, the two halves of a slit reed vibrate against each other. 3, record 2, English, - single%2Dreed%20instrument

[One] type of flute is a globular flute, also called a vessel flute. "Ocarina" is a common name for one of the most common types of globular flutes. Unlike their tubular flute cousins, globular flutes can be any shape, but still have finger holes and a blow hole, and are played in generally the same fashion as a tubular flute.... The physics of sound production is significantly different between tubular and globular instruments. In a tubular instrument, a vibrating column of air produces the sound. The length of this air column is the primary factor determining the pitch. However, the pitch can be modified by uncovering toneholes along the body of the instrument, which effectively shorten the length of the air column and raise the pitch. But with globular instruments, the shape of the air contained within the vessel is generally irrelevant to the pitch. It's the total volume of air contained in the vessel and the size of the opening that determines the pitch. 2, record 3, English, - globular%20flute

Fluidized bed combustion systems use a heated bed of sand-like material suspended(fluidized) within a rising column of air to burn many types and classes of fuel. This technique results in a vast improvement in combustion efficiency of high moisture content fuels, and is adaptable to a variety of "waste type" fuels. The scrubbing action of the bed material on the fuel particle enhances the combustion process by stripping away the carbon dioxide and char layers that normally form around the fuel particle. This allows oxygen to reach the combustible material much more readily and increases the rate and efficiency of the combustion process. 3, record 8, English, - fluidized%20bed%20system

It is important to note that convective cells can cause air currents both upward and downward. Upward convective currents carry pollutants many kilometers high into the atmosphere. At these high altitudes advective currents and prevailing winds can transport these pollutants vast distances very quickly. As air spreads from the rising column, it is cooled and falls back down to the earth. This results in a circular rotation of the air. 3, record 14, English, - advective%20current

Drainage of the lake-beds, related to a seasonal phenomenon of dust storms between February and May, has also affected air quality. advection: The horizontal movement of air around the world is known as advection. Advection is the primary mechanism responsible for long range transport of pollutants. Air stripping is a technology in which volatile organic compounds(VOCs) are transferred from extracted water to air. Typically, air stripping takes place in a packed tower(known as an air stripper) or an aeration tank. The air stripper includes a spray nozzle at the top of the tower. It sprays groundwater that has been pumped to the surface over the packing in the column. As the water descends, air is forced up through the column, stripping off the volatile compounds.... Air strippers transfer contaminants from one medium to another. There is no destruction of the contaminant. Consequently, the risks of emitting pollutants into the air must be carefully evaluated. Often, the air stream(or off-gas) is treated before it is emitted to the atmosphere. 2, record 17, English, - air%20stripping

Blood pressure measurement by sphygmomanometer is normally performed using a mercury manometer. This can consist of a U-tube half-filled with mercury, but more commonly it is a single tube, held vertical in use, which sits in a small reservoir of mercury. The reservoir is connected by a rubber tube to the source of air pressure to be measured. As pressure is applied mercury is forced up the column and the pressure can be read from a scale behind. The actual pressure is indicated by the difference in the level of the mercury in the column and the reservoir. 4, record 26, English, - mercury%20sphygmomanometer

A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section. 1, record 27, English, - column%20drier

2, record 27, French, - s%C3%A9choir%20%C3%A0%20colonne

James Six's combined maximum and minimum thermometer... consists of a U-tube, the bend of which is filled with mercury. One leg contains spirit above the mercury and terminates in a bulb also full of spirit. The other leg also contains a column of spirit above the mercury, but terminates in a bulb containing air and vapour of spirit mixed. With increase of temperature the spirit in the full bulb expands; the mercury in consequence is pushed round the bend and rises to a greater or less extent in the other leg, carrying before it a steel index which thus marks the maximum temperature. With cold the spirit in the full bulb contracts, and the mercury moves back carrying with it a second index which marks the minimum temperature. The instrument is set by drawing down the two indices upon the two ends of the mercury column by means of a magnet. 3, record 36, English, - Six%27s%20thermometer

4, record 36, French, - thermom%C3%A8tre%20Six

With regard to the Pacific side of the Arctic Basin, Overland et al. (1997) report that the position of the tropospheric cold pool is approximately centered over the Canadian Arctic and the Beaufort Sea, displaced from the North Pole by orographic effects of the North American mountain ranges. The result is advection of atmospheric heat and moisture into the Greenland and Barents seas, and the eastern Arctic. The position of this arctic cold pool in turn affects the position of the arctic front and the atmospheric circulation in the western Pacific. 1, record 44, English, - arctic%20cold%20pool

There are at least three distinct types of cold pool : 1. Large(in areal extent), slow-moving vortices at latitudes poleward of roughly 50deg N & S. They are often over, or immediately downwind of the source regions of polar or arctic air masses, in such areas as the Canadian Arctic or Siberian Russia. They take up the characteristics of quasi-permanent features, often appearing on monthly, or even seasonal average maps. The column of very cold(dense) air associated with this version of the cold pool, is reinforced by net outgoing radiation which produces a highly stable, bitterly cold near-surface environment, with a surface ridge or anticyclone on MSLP charts. 2. Once cold air from the source region as detailed in(1.) above is caught up in the circulation of mid-latitude depressions, the characteristics of the air mass are altered... 3. A pool of cold air can also become "detached" at lower latitudes... 2, record 44, English, - arctic%20cold%20pool

Air gauges are of two types : the flow or column type which indicates air velocity, and the pressure type which indicates air pressure in the system.... [In the] column type air gauge... the air flows through a transparent tapered tube in which a float is suspended as a result of this air flow.... The air flowing through the gauge exhausts through the passages in the gauging head into the clearance between the head and the workpiece. The rate of flow is proportional to the clearance indicated by the position of the float in the column. The gauge is set to a master and the float is then positioned by means of an adjusting knob. 1, record 61, English, - column%20type%20air%20gauge

Speed-attitude correction is provided by the Mach trim compensation system. Mach trim compensation automatically provides forces to the control column(elevator) to compensate for nosedown pitching moments of the airplane at high Mach number. Control column position is effected by the Mach trim actuator installed at the lower part of the first officer's control column control mechanism. The actuator receives command signals from the stability augmentation computer. Mach number is computed from pitot and static air pressure input changes to the air data computer(ADC-1). The air data computer shapes the information and transmits it to the stability augmentation computer where it is further shaped and then transmitted to the actuator to command control column and elevator movement. 1, record 62, English, - Mach%20trim%20servo%20actuator
