According to explanations given by a member of the CF18 Project Office, Department of National Defence, Ottawa, this term refers to a physical area over which air combat simulation takes place. Transceivers and other types of electronic equipment are dispersed at "strategic" locations over the range to ensure communication between the aircraft and a home station and to transmit and record data concerning the simulated mission.

Air combat simulator. Under licence from British Aerospace, Redifon is manufacturing a new air combat simulation system... which is being offered in two versions : in the standard configuration the simulator provides a single ’dome’ display in which the pilot ’flies’ against a computer-controlled target image; in dual dome configuration it allows pilot-to-pilot combat interfaced through a central computer complex and using individual projection systems.
