Air-displacement plethysmography is a densitometry technique used to determine body composition with air displacement(instead of water displacement, as used with hydrostatic weighing) to determine body volume. The equipment consists of a closed airtight chamber... The volume of air in the chamber when the chamber is empty is known. When a person enters the airtight chamber, he displaces his own volume in air. The volume of air remaining in the chamber is determined(with a correction for thoracic air volume). The person's body volume is the difference between the volume of air in the empty chamber minus the volume of air in the chamber when the person is in the chamber. 5, record 2, English, - air%2Ddisplacement%20plethysmography

AC medium is a good primary isolation medium possessing unique growth promoting properties for both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. It is recommended as a general culture medium for anaerobes, microaerophiles and aerobes. The medium contains an agar flux that retards air diffusion and when sealed in snap-cap tubes immediately after autoclaving, it maintains an oxygen gradient ranging from anaerobic at the bottom to aerobic at the top. Techniques :... Within 24 hours after inoculation, anaerobic organisms will be growing near the bottom, microaerophiles near the center, and aerobic organisms near the top Facultative organisms will grow throughout the tube. The composition is the following : beef extract(3 g), yeast extract(3 g), malt extract(3 g), proteose peptone No. 3(Difco)(20 g). dextrose(5 g), agar(1 g), ascorbic acid(0. 2 g), distilled water(1 liter)... 4, record 3, English, - all%2Dculture%20medium

Grapes begin their growth cycle in the spring when average daily temperature is about 10 °C(50 °F). To reach maturity, they require a certain amount of heat above 10 °C during the growing season. This amount of heat, called the heat summation, is calculated by totalling the number of degrees of average daily temperature over 10 °C for each day of the growing season. A heat summation of about 1, 800 is required for successful growth. If the heat summation is less than required, the grapes will not ripen; they will reach the end of the growing season with insufficient sugar and too much acidity.... Where the heat summation is much greater than required,... the grapes mature earlier and with less acidity and colour than those produced under cooler conditions. Factors influencing the heat summation of a vineyard and, therefore, grape composition include exposure... air drainage..., soil temperature(above 10 °C during the growing season), and soil moisture content... 3, record 4, English, - heat%20summation

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface : the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett's work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination. 1, record 7, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released. 3, record 13, English, - tunnel%20test

1, record 13, French, - essai%20en%20tunnel

The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. In this region of the atmosphere, Hydrogen and Helium are the prime components and are only present at extremely low densities. 3, record 14, English, - Earth%27s%20atmosphere

2, record 18, French, - nylon

STEP : Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle. Worden and Everitt have proposed to carry out an improved version of Galileo's Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment, by placing masses of different composition inside a satellite orbiting the Earth to obtain a long duration of free fall. Very high positional sensitivity can be achieved by cooling the experiment to 1. 8 K and using SQUIDs to detect in current changes in magnetic pickup coils. The test masses of different materials and the position measuring equipment are placed inside the satellite and micro Newton thrusters are used to cancel the small accelerations of the satellite due to air drag, radiation pressure and the solar wind which could couple to masses. 2, record 22, English, - satellite%20test%20of%20the%20equivalence%20principle

Peroxide Forming Chemicals. Materials that are susceptible to peroxide formation(i. e., autooxidation) are ones that typically react with air, moisture or impurities and produce a change in their chemical composition in normal storage. The peroxides that form are less volatile than the solvent itself and thus tend to concentrate. This is particularly dangerous if peroxides are present during a distillation, where the applied heat to the concentrated solution may trigger a violent explosion. Equally dangerous is to allow a container of this material to evaporate to dryness, leaving the crystals of peroxide at the bottom of the container. 4, record 23, English, - peroxide%20forming%20chemical

Chemicals that are sensitive to peroxide formation can be broken into three categories .... A. Peroxide hazard after prolonged storage. Form potentially explosive peroxides without concentrating. B.
