Silas McDowell (1795-1879) was a southern pomologist and a botanist of renown ... during the 1850s. ... He was the originator of the "thermal belt" concept which is a zone on a mountainside where frost and freezes are less common than in the valleys and on the mountaintops. 4, record 1, English, - frostless%20zone
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The air flowing down the slopes is warmed by mixing with the air above ground level and to some extent also by adiabatic compression. The frostless zone is not a fixed belt but varies in level from night to night and season to season according to the initial temperature, the length of the night, and the clearness of the sky. Its lower limit is sometimes clearly marked by the upper limit of frost damage to crops, following the hillsides at a small angle to the horizontal. 3, record 1, English, - frostless%20zone

In the region below the surface, snow compaction is thought to occur in three stages. In the first stage near the surface, compaction occurs by grain growth and rearrangement due to grain boundary sliding. In the second stage, compaction occurs through increasing overburden pressure inducing creep deformation and sintering. In the final stage, interconnected pores have closed off, and further compaction is caused by air bubble compression. 3, record 2, English, - snow%20compaction

A ramrocket engine combines a rocket-cycle with a ramjet cycle. The "heart" of such a rocket-based combined-cycle engine is the ejector where the propulsive streams of both cycles mix. The propulsive efficiency of the ramrocket will greatly depend on the losses incurred in the ejector of the engine. In this project, computational fluid dynamic methods are employed to numerically simulate the turbulent mixing of supersonic/subsonic flows in the presence of finite-rate kerosene/air combustion. The effects of geometry of the ejector and afterburning in the rocket exhaust on flow losses in the ejector and its compression ratio are explored. The ramrocket is a candidate for "next generation" air-breathing reusable space launchers 2, record 8, English, - ejector

A ram accelerator is a gun that utilizes ramjet compression to accelerate a projectile to extremely high speeds. In a normal ramjet, air is compressed for combustion between a spike-shaped ram and an outer casing. In a ram accelerator, a similar shaped ram is fired(often from a conventional gun) into the accelerator barrel, causing compression between the projectile and the barrel' s walls. The barrel contains a fuel-air mixture. As the ram compresses the mixture, it is ignited behind it. In a typical ram accelerator design, thin membranes designed to be easily punctured by the ram wall off sections of the barrel. Each section is filled with a different fuel-air mixture chosen so that later sections have higher speeds of sound. As such, the ram can be maintained at optimal speeds of mach 3–5(relative to the mixture that it travels through) during its entire acceleration period. 2, record 9, English, - ram%20accelerator

A new kind of L-band long-range surveillance radar family designed not only for air traffic control and air defense but also for shipboard air defense.... The radar's features include a high-gain, low-sidelobe, shaded beam antenna; a master oscillator power amplification transmitter with a combination of a solid state amplifier and wide-band klystron; and a wideband receiver with low noise and three channels. Quadraphase coded pulse compression techniques are employed. The digital target extractor can extract, process, and report the target data automatically. 1, record 15, English, - digital%20target%20extractor

The dry-line is an area where the relatively dry air from the west that has passed over the Rocky Mountains and warmed by compression, butts up against and flows over very warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. This boundary may also be referred to as the dew point front because dew point temperatures can change as much as 9°C/km. This boundary can occur as far north as the Dakotas, and as far east as the Texas-Louisiana border, but are most common on the east side of the Rockies. All three types of foam plastic can be produced using processes such as injection, extrusion, and compression molding to create foam products in many of the same shapes as solid plastics products. Venting. When the hot plastic is injected into the mold it displaces air. In a well-built, properly clamped mold without vents, the injection material may compress the air. The heat of compression might burn the material. The force of the compression might open the mold, causing flash. The resistance of the compressed air might prevent the mold from completely filling. These problems are alleviated by used of vents, which are usually ground on the parting line. Their size depends on the nature of the material and the size of the cavity. 2, record 31, English, - venting
