DEF

[An] insulating concrete with foamed slag as aggregate.

CONT

Foamed-slag concrete blocks are used both in load and non-load bearing walls. This concrete has high fire-resistance properties and about 75% of the thermal conductivity of other lightweight concretes.... Production of this type [of concrete] is claimed to contribute less to air pollution than does the normal process.

CONT

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric).

cork insulation: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Any of several types of electrically charged (positive and negative) submicroscopic particles normally found in the atmosphere.

CONT

Atmospheric ions are of two principal types, small ions and large ions, although a class of intermediate ions has occasionally been reported.... The two main classes of ions differ widely in mobility. Only the highly mobile small ions contribute significantly to the electrical conductivity of the air under most conditions. The intermediate ions and large ions are important in certain space charge effects, but are too sluggish to contribute much to conductivity. The processes of formation of ions are offset by certain processes of destruction of the ions.

In thermal conductivity analysers, a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit measures the imbalance caused by passing gas over detector filaments, using half of the cells for the fumigant air mixture and the other half for air as a control. This analyser, in a portable form, is commonly used to check for methyl bromide in ship holds, but it can also be calibrated for other gases. It will not differentiate between fumigants if mixtures are used.

CONT

Kaimannflex CC is the optimal solution for particularly critical conditions(high humidity percentage, high delta between i. t. and o. t.). Its excellent water vapour diffusion resistance µ, very low temperature conductivity value lambda, environmental and fire safety requirements make it the ideal insulation for any type of use in both civil and industrial air-conditioning systems... A flow of water vapour that tends to pass through the insulating material is created in air-conditioning systems as a result of the difference in pressure between the piping that is at a low temperature and the one of the surrounding air whose temperature is higher. The greater the water vapour resistance(µ), the longer the insulating material and its requirements last.

CONT

Normally, a blow-molded part is cooled externally by the mold cavity, forcing heat to travel through the entire wall thickness. With the poor thermal conductivity of plastic resins, molding cycle times of heavy parts can be considerable. Internal cooling systems are designed to speed the mold cooling time, thus reducing costs by removing some of this heat from the inside. Several systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods.
