One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available.

A number of design approaches were taken to control the sheet flutter problem, including changes in the pocket geometry and the use of air doctors to divert the more damaging air currents. However, the most widely utilized stratagem on existing machines was to switch to a single-felt configuration for the first dryer section where the sheet is most prone toward wrinkling. In the so-called serpentine felt run, the bottom felt is eliminated and the top felt follows the sheet and wraps both the top and bottom dryers. Thus, the felt supports the sheet in the draws between top and bottom dryer cylinders, but also runs between the sheet and the bottom dryer surfaces. The serpentine felt run is effective in controlling sheet flutter up to a point, but instabilities are still evident at higher speeds. Unfortunately, with this arrangement, the bottom tier of dryer cylinders becomes redundant.

An example will illustrate the futility of attempting to control welding smoke in a production area by means of a ceiling exhaust fan. Assume :(1) Exhaust fan, 15 ft over work area and directly overhead,(2) fan capacity 20, 000 cfm, and(3) exhaust opening 5 ft in diameter. Calculate the velocity of air movement at one diameter, or 5 ft from the opening. The minimum capture velocity necessary to control welding smoke is 100 fpm. Yet at a point only 5 ft from the fan opening the velocity has decreased from approximately 1000 fpm to 75 fpm and the welking smoke is still 10 ft away.

The velocity required to capture and exhaust particulates varies from 100 fpm, for particles released with practically no velocity in quiet air, to 2000 fpm for particles released at high initial velocity into rapid air motion.

When air from the compressor is forced into the brake pipe, compressed air is stored inside the main reservoir and the combined reservoirs. At that point, the position of the control valve establishes communication between brake cylinders and atmosphere. This is called charging. Brake cylinder release springs return the pistons to release position. There is no pressure between brake shoes and wheels. Everything is prepared for brake application.
