An improved technology in utilizing solar energy for drying grain is the use of solar driers where the air is heated in a solar collector and then passed through beds of grain. There are two basic types of solar drier appropriate for use with grain : natural convection driers where the air flow is induced by thermal gradients; and forced convection driers wherein air is forced through a solar collector and the grain bed by a fan. 2, record 2, English, - solar%20dryer

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 8, English, - cork%20insulation

Radiators, convectors, and baseboard and finned tube units are types of heat-distributing devices commonly used in steam and low temperature water heating systems. They supply heat through a combination of radiation and convection, and their function is to maintain the desired air temperature in the space. In general, these types of heat-distributing units should be placed at the points of greatest heat loss of the space to offset or counteract these losses. fournaise : Ce terme est considéré comme impropre par les puristes. 7, record 12, French, - g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rateur%20d%27air%20chaud

Thermals are created by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface from solar radiation, and are an example of convection. The size and strength of thermals are influenced greatly by the properties of the lower atmosphere(the troposphere). The most important factor is the amount of atmospheric stability. Generally, when the atmosphere is less stable thermal formation is more likely. Thermals are often indicated by the presence of visible cumulus clouds. The rising air in a thermal cools as it ascends, until the water vapor in the air begins to condense into visible droplets. 5, record 16, English, - thermal

Convection. Process of heat [(transfer of heat) ] carried from one point to another by movement of a liquid or a gas(i. e., air). Natural convection is caused by expansion of the liquid or gas when heated. Expansion reduces the density of the medium, causing it to rise above the cooler, more dense portions of the medium. Gravity heating systems are examples of the profitable use of natural convection. The air, heated by the furnace, becomes less dense(consequently lighter) and rises, distributing heat to the various areas of the house without any type of blower. When a blower is used, the heat transfer method is called "forced convection. " 5, record 26, English, - natural%20convection

Smoke plumes that rise through the environment due to buoyancy or momentum become diluted with environmental air, where the rate of dilution is proportional to the rise rate of the plume. The entrainment coefficient is this constant of proportionality. This concept of lateral entrainment does not work well for convective thermals in the atmospheric boundary layer. One reason is that boundary layer thermals are part of a large overturning circulation involving the whole boundary layer during statically unstable conditions of free convection, rather than being thin currents of rising smokestack air. 2, record 31, English, - entrainment%20coefficient

There are at least three distinct types of cold pool : 1. Large(in areal extent), slow-moving vortices at latitudes poleward of roughly 50deg N & S. They are often over, or immediately downwind of the source regions of polar or arctic air masses, in such areas as the Canadian Arctic or Siberian Russia.... 2. Once cold air from the source region as detailed in(1.) above is caught up in the circulation of mid-latitude depressions, the characteristics of the air mass are altered. Warming from below(over relatively warmer sea surfaces for example), leads to instability developing, and with an accompanying injection of moisture(after a reasonable length of passage over the sea), cloudy convection(showers, thunderstorms) is triggered. Cold pools in these situations are often maxima of such activity, with surface charts showing west or northwesterly airflow, often with cyclonically curved isobars. The cold pool will move in the general synoptic flow, and will eventually warm out(disappear) due to sensible & latent heat exchanges within the environment of the cold pool. However,... sometimes the cold pool will transform into a slow-moving, longer-lasting entity, particularly if the feed of ex-polar air on its western flank is maintained-this occurs in highly meridional situations. 3. A pool of cold air can also become ’detached’ at lower latitudes... 2, record 34, English, - cold%20air%20pool

Methods of measuring evapotranspiration generally are divided into two categories : water budgeting and energy budgeting. The former method relies on accurate accounting of water flow into and out of a control area.... Energy budget methods rely on an accurate accounting of energy to and from the land surface and generally assume one-dimensional energy flow. Because the energy needed to evaporate water is relatively large(about 580 calories per gram), ET, or latent heat, can represent a significant component of the energy budget. Net radiation is the difference between incoming shortwave(solar) radiation and outgoing shortwave and longwave radiation, sensible heat is the energy transported from the land surface by air movement(convection), latent heat is the energy transported away from the surface by evaporating water, and soil/water heat is the heat that goes into changing the temperature of the soil or the water standing on the land surface. Any of these components may reverse in direction-for example, latent heat is added to the surface by condensation(dew formation), and net radiation is directed upward at night. 1, record 36, English, - energy%20budget%20method

Why Floor Insulation Works. Heat doesn’t rise. The myth that heat rises was used for many years to justify not insulating floors at all. That led to some very cold feet. It's hot air that rises. An air mass that is warmer than the air around it will rise in relation to that cooler air. The process of hot air rising is called convection. It's only one way that heat can escape a building. Two others are conduction and radiation. Floor insulation limits all three modes of heat loss. A warmer floor reduces the temperature difference that drives convection. Floor insulation also directly impedes conduction and radiation to the colder air below the floor. 1, record 37, English, - floor%20insulation

The diffusion climatology of the Columbia River valley has been documented by Hewson(1945) but little information is available for most other areas. Hewson's studies indicate that although ground-based radiation inversions may dissipate almost every morning... the pollution potential of a deep valley may become very high during periods when there is not an adequate exchange rate with cleaner air aloft, due to a capping inversion, weak upper winds or insufficient daytime convection. 1, record 46, English, - diffusion%20climatology

The circulation of heated air between adjacent rooms and different levels can be improved by using vents. Properly located floor vents can assist the natural convection cycle of rising warm air and falling cool air by providing a path. For example, the central stairway in a two-storey home allows warm air to reach the second floor, but circulation is limited because there is little return of displaced air back to the ground floor. Add one or two floor vents near outside walls and the cooler air upstairs will flow down through the vents and back towards the heater. 1, record 52, English, - floor%20vent

Many older warm air systems employ central combustion but do not use a fan to circulate heated air to the living areas. These are commonly known as gravity or convection systems. To ease the flow of heated air between the living spaces and the furnace, ducts of large diameter are used. Additionally, each warm air supply duct is usually connected directly to the plenum or air reservoir attached to the top of the furnace itself. 1, record 58, English, - gravity%20distribution%20system
