Record 1 2014-02-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meetings and Assemblies (Administration)
CONT

... an air defense crew at its home site is presented with a series of problems which are simulated on the crew's own radar scopes, with detailed flight plans, etc. After the problem, a careful record is available of all relevant interactions, and the crew holds a debriefing session in which members analyze their faults and attempt to make necessary corrections.

CONT

The Government of Canada carried out a thorough results-based evaluation of the 2002 event, including a debrief session which has provided the NAIG [North American Indigenous Games] Council and the Aboriginal Sport Council (ASC) with solid data to assist with decision-making around the future of the event.

CONT

A new kind of L-band long-range surveillance radar family designed not only for air traffic control and air defense but also for shipboard air defense.... The radar's features include a high-gain, low-sidelobe, shaded beam antenna; a master oscillator power amplification transmitter with a combination of a solid state amplifier and wide-band klystron; and a wideband receiver with low noise and three channels. Quadraphase coded pulse compression techniques are employed. The digital target extractor can extract, process, and report the target data automatically.

DEF

A D-band pulse doppler radar used to detect low flying aircraft and provide alerting and tentative identification to Chaparral and Vulcan fire units and Manportable Air Defense(MANPAD) teams.

OBS

The radar had a range of about 20 kilometers, contained the Mark XII Identification, Friend or Foe (IFF) system, and transmitted digital data to the target alerting data display sets (TADDS) located with each Chaparral/Vulcan battalion. The FAAR section consisted of three men and one vehicle and trailer.

Over-the-horizon(OTH) radar systems were first developed during the Cold War as part of the early warning defense network. With the end of the Cold War, research into OTH radar continued, with a new focus : detection of illegal aircraft engaged in drug smuggling. Current research had its genesis in U. S. Air Force and Navy laboratories in the 1960s, as well as at Stanford University. At present, the United States, Russia, China, and Australia employ OTH radar for surveillance purposes. Much of the current effort is concentrated on the development of relocatable OTH radar(ROTHR), first demonstrated by the Navy in the early 1980s.

The Next Generation Weather Radar system(NEXRAD) comprises approximately 160 Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler(WSR-88D) sites throughout the United States and selected overseas locations. This system is a joint effort of the United States Departments of Commerce(DOC), Defense(DOD), and Transportation(DOT). The controlling agencies are the National Weather Service(NWS), Air Weather Service(AWS) and Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), respectively. Level II data are the three meteorological base data quantities : reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. From these quantities, computer processing generates numerous meteorological analysis products known as Level III data. Level II data are recorded at all NWS and most AWS and FAA WSR-88D sites. Level III products are recorded at the 120 NWS sites. The data are sent to the National Climatic Data Center(NCDC) for archiving and dissemination.

At sea, air defense also uses large radars on ships, but more use is made of airborne radar and control systems. The weight and size of long-range radars restricts their installation to the larger ships; airborne radar over the ocean does not have severe land clutter to contend with, making it simpler than overland systems; the horizon limits are at a greater range; and the aircraft can patrol a large area.

The US Air Force recently issued a Request for Proposals to industry for the design, development and test of a Digital Radar Landmass Simulator(DRLMS) system. Planned for use with the F-16 operational flight trainer, the DRLMS is intended to provide air-to-ground training to F-16 pilots from the air forces of the US, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and other countries. Data bases provided by the US Army's Defense Mapping Agency will be used to produce real-world simulation for the first time.
