Due to the drop in pressure that occurs in high-pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC) as the solvent passes from the column to the detector, any dissolved gases(most commonly air) are partially released as bubbles within the detector, producing anomalous and misleading results. To avoid this problem, solvents are degassed before use, either by a nitrogen purge or by heating and stirring under vacuum.

A particularly sensitive and accurate type of hygrometer has been developed in recent years by the Instrument Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau. The device, known as the infrared hygrometer, employs a beam of infrared light projected through the air to a photo-electric detector. Two separate wave lengths of light are used; one is absorbed by water vapor and the other passes through undiminished. The ratio of the infrared light transmitted by the different wave lengths is a direct indication of the amount of water vapor in the light path.

[A standard] testing method measuring flame spread, fuel contribution and smoke density of materials under controlled conditions.

The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released.

A sensitive flame ionization detector was developed for capillary column gas chromatography. The detector used no make-up gas and lower flow-rates of hydrogen and air to suppress detector noise and to achieve maximum response. The detector was responsive down to the 10 SUP-SUP 1 SUP 3 g level for C SUB 2-C SUB 1 SUB 1 hydrocarbons. Atmospheric hydrocarbons could be determined at parts per billion or parts per trillion levels by using gas chromatography with the detector via cryogenic concentration of a small volume of air sample.(Pascal Data Base).

The Avionics Air Assembly (AAA) is a central component in U.S. rack equipment thermal management. The AAA provides the capability to remove the rack airborne sensible heat loads and transfer them to the Internal Thermal Control System (ITCS). It receives on/off signals and electable speed commands from a command interface and provides two temperature signals and a speed feedback signal. Ambient rack air is drawn into the AAA via an internal fan, cooled with an air/liquid heat exchanger and then redistributed within the rack.

The Avionics Air Assembly(AAA), which interfaces with the temperature cooling loop, converts cool water to cool air, and circulates the cooled air through the rack and past the racks’ smoke detector. The AAA can cool up to 1200 W of payload waste heat.

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability.

An ionization smoke detector has a small amount of radioactive material which ionizes the air in the sensing chamber, thus rendering it conductive and premitting a current flow through the air between two charged electrodes. This gives the sensing chamber an effective electrical conductance. When smoke particles enter the ionization area, they decrease the conductance of the air by attaching themselves to the ions, causing a reduction in mobility. When the conductance is less than a predetermined level, the detector responds.

In thermal conductivity analysers, a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit measures the imbalance caused by passing gas over detector filaments, using half of the cells for the fumigant air mixture and the other half for air as a control. This analyser, in a portable form, is commonly used to check for methyl bromide in ship holds, but it can also be calibrated for other gases. It will not differentiate between fumigants if mixtures are used.

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

The thermopile heat of combustion detector is at the heart of each heating value transmitter. Air is used as a heat transfer media and flows around the combustion chamber. Any increase in the heat produced by the combustion of a controlled sample of process gas is immediately sensed and reported to the microprocessor. Air enters the combustion chamber on the outside cold junctions where its heat is measured, then flows down the outside of the thermopile towards the viewer to turn through 180° past the end of the thermopile assembly and then flows up through the heat exchanger... to mix with the heated flue gases from the burner.

The Forney Dual Fuel Horn Igniter assembly consists of a mounting plate, combination oil and gas gun, High Energy Spark Igniter(HESI), 6" combustion air tube, flame detector and horn. The mounting plate retains the oil/gas gun, HESI and flame detector guide pipe. The flame detector head is mounted on a 1" sight pipe which provides an unobstructed view of the flame inside the horn.

This fibre optic viewing head extension is particularly useful for solving the sighting problems associated with tilting or movable burners. The flame envelope from this type of burner can be tilted from a horizontal position up or down as much as 30 degrees. It would be impossible to follow this flame pattern with a fixed sighting through the wind-box. Welding the tip guide (lens end) of this viewing head extension to the movable air compartment nozzle solves this problem. This viewing head extension can also be used for those applications where it is impossible to find a clear unobstructed view of the flame using a standard sight pipe. Here again the viewing head extension is mounted inside the furnace for a clear unobstructed view of the flame.

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses.
