There are four common conditions that can require surgical chest tube insertion, including: pneumothorax (air leak from the lung into the chest); hemothorax (bleeding into the chest); empyema (lung abscess or pus in the chest); pneumothorax or hemothorax after surgery or from trauma to the chest.

Chest tube thoracostomy is done to drain fluid, blood, or air from the space around the lungs. Some diseases, such as pneumonia and cancer, can cause an excess amount of fluid or blood to build up in the space around the lungs(called a pleural effusion). Sometimes, the lung can be accidentally punctured allowing air to gather outside the lung, causing its collapse(called a pneumothorax). Building Related Illness(BRI)... refers to a defined illness with a known causative agent resulting from exposure to the building air. While the causative agent can be chemical(e. g., formaldehyde), it is often biological. Typical sources of biological contaminants are humidification systems, cooling towers, drain pans or filters, other wet surfaces, or water damaged building material. Symptoms may be specific or mimic symptoms commonly associated with the flu, including fever, chills, and cough. Serious lung and respiratory conditions can occur. Legionnaires’ disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever are common examples of building related illness.

BRI; Building-Related Illness: This term is used when symptoms of a disease from several occupants of a building can be directly linked to specific airborne contaminants in that building. This differs from SBS [sick building syndrome] because with SBS no specific illness or cause can be identified.

Bellows AFS is a subinstallation of Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and the location of a pit for disposal of waste asphalt. During the 1940s and 1950s, it was standard practice to heat, drain, crush and bury the drums used to transport asphalt oil.

The purpose of this switch is to avoid overflowing the laundry tub when the automatic washer is discharging its water. The switch is installed on the drain line between the laundry tub and laundry pump. Head pressure from the laundry tub activates the switch. Simultaneously a flow of water forming a loop from the pressure side of the pump through the switch bowl and returning to the pump intake keeps the switch contacts closed.(Pump runs continuously). When the laundry tub is completely empty the pump suction line takes in air. This pocket of air travels through the pump and through the return pressure loop. When the air enters the switch bowl, the pressure gives way to the pump suction side, thus pulling the switch contacts open(pump shuts off).
