The rotary dryer, sometimes known as a rotary kiln, is a type of industrial dryer employed to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into direct contact with heated gas. The dryer is made up of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by concrete columns or steel beams. The dryer slopes slightly so that the discharge end is lower than the material feed end in order to convey the material through the dryer under gravity. Material to be dried enters the higher end of the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. The batch-in-bin drying process involves using a bin as a batch dryer. A 3 to 4-foot deep layer of grain is placed in the bin and the fan and heater started. Typical drying air temperatures are 120 to 160F with airflow rates of 8 to 15 cfm/bushel. Drying begins at the floor and progresses upward. Grain at the floor of the bin becomes excessively dry while the top layer of the batch remains fairly wet. The grain is cooled in the bin after it is dried. Some batch-in-bin dryers hold the grain being dried in a layer near the roof. After the grain is dried it is dropped to the bin floor where it is cooled. The standard method is a technique whereby the cleaned and dried tooth surface is treated with an acidic etchant solution or gel. Application of the etchant for a short period of time(approximately one minute) on the tooth surface to be treated, followed by a thorough water rinse and air drying, produces a selective dissolution of the tooth surface to promote an effective bond with the subsequently applied restorative bonding agent or materials. The acid removes calcium salts which increases the size and number of the microspaces. Three methods of discharging the digester are used in the sulfite processes-hot blowing, cold blowing, and flushing.
