At selected locations in the U. S. Lab(9 ISPRs-International Standard Payload Racks) and the [Japanese Experiment Module-JEM](5 ISPRs), a low-temperature water loop(0. 6-10 °C or 33-50 °F) is provided via a 1. 3 cm(0. 5 in.) line with a quick-disconnect. The maximum return temperature on this loop is 21 °C(70 °F). A pressure drop of 40 kPa(5. 8 psid) is allowed across the inlet and outlet of both water loop interfaces. Payloads can also dissipate small amounts of heat into the cabin air. Depending on the temperature conditions set by the crew, a minimum of 500 W can be dissipated into both the U. S. Lab and Columbus(complement of all payloads within the module). Negotiations are underway with Japan on the allowable heat dissipation into the JEM. 2, record 2, English, - low%2Dtemperature%20water%20loop

Although sometimes found in stagnant water, apple snails are more common in lakes and rivers where the water is clear and high in oxygen. These large, herbivorous snails usually breathe with their gills, but they can also obtain oxygen from the air through a lunglike structure in the mantle. After mating, a female apple snail lays masses of 1/4-inch eggs on plant stems and low branches near water. The young snails drop into the water after hatching. 1, record 5, English, - apple%20snails

Precision airdrop allows aircraft to accurately deliver supplies while minimizing the risk and reducing the possibility of enemy detection of the intended DZ. Precision is achieved through improved mission planning software and steerable canopies. There are currently two types of precision airdrop under development. A bulletin issued by [local forecast] offices to alert the public to expected formation of thin ice on plants, trees, etc., when temperatures are expected to drop to between 30°F and 40°F. Since air temperature sensors are located 5 feet above ground level, frost will often occur when air temperature sensors indicate about 36°F. A bulletin may be issued indicating "Scattered Frost" or "Frost in low lying areas". 3, record 7, English, - frost%20warning
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Frost describes the formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans. Frost develops under conditions similar to dew, except the temperatures of the Earth’s surface and earthbound objects falls below 32°F. As with the term "freeze," this condition is primarily significant during the growing season. If a frost period is sufficiently severe to end the growing season or delay its beginning, it is commonly referred to as a "killing frost." Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it can occur with standard observing level temperature (at 5 feet above ground) in the mid to upper 30’s. 4, record 7, English, - frost%20warning
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 OBS
In consulted sources, "frost warning" and "frost advisory" are defined in the same manner. However, Environment Canada differentiates a "warning" from an "advisory": "A weather advisory is issued when forecast conditions are expected to cause general inconvenience or concern, and do not pose a serious enough threat to issue a weather warning. An advisory will often precede a warning." 5, record 7, English, - frost%20warning

The hot wedge or hot knife method consists of an electronically heated resistance element in the shape of a blade that is passed between the two sheets to be sealed. As it melts the surfaces, roller pressure is applied. An interesting variation is the dual-hot-wedge method, which forms two parallel seams with an unbonded space between them. This space is subsequently pressurized with air and any lowering of pressure signifies a leak in the seam. 1, record 14, English, - pressurized%20dual%20seam%20test

While the simple blast cell is the most prolific technology today for freezing bulk materials, processors are investigating other forms of inexpensive freezing that can drop temperature quickly and flexibly. Plate freezing and continuous belt freezing are two examples. In plate freezing, the product is generally placed in a leak-proof bag, although in some cases direct contact is used, and then compressed between two plates that are held at-40°F. Freezing times of just a few hours are possible, depending on the thickness of the product. Continuous freezing belt systems are similar to a blast cell in terms of air flow and temperature, with the primary difference being that instead of staging palletized product, boxed product moves on a slow conveyor belt within an enclosure. This allows differently shaped and sized boxes to be loaded simultaneously and usually requires a 24-hour dwell time to reach zero. It is a bit slower than plate freezing, but with more product flexibility. 1, record 16, English, - belt%20freezing

Lockheed Martin has begun drop tests of its SCALPEL low-collateral-damage munition, the company announced May 27. Three inert SCALPELs were released by two AV-8B Harriers during a recent flight test at the Navy's China Lake test range in California, hitting their marks. The next phase of flights will demonstrate warhead lethality, the company said. SCALPEL is essentially a weaponized version of the company's enhanced laser guided training round with improved guidance and a small warhead. It is envisioned as an affordable option for close air support roles, especially in urban areas where it is crucial to hit targets precisely and avoid collateral effects. Medium-and large-sized unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-1 Predator could carry it as well as manned aircraft like the USAF F-16 and Navy/Marine Corps F/A-18 and AV-8B, according to Lockheed Martin. 3, record 17, English, - small%20contained%20area%20laser%20precision%20energetic%20load

The first type of precision airdrop is a single system called AGAS(Affordable Guided Airdrop System) that uses in-service round cargo parachutes. A detailed knowledge of the wind patterns at the drop location is used to calculate the required flight path and drop point. The flight path is maintained by the system's ability to pull slips which dump air from one side of the canopy. By incorporating wind data with this limited method of steering, the system has proven capable of landing an average of 48 meters away from the intended grid reference when deployed from 13 000 ft above ground level. This accuracy is phenomenal given that the present LF freefall cylinder rarely even hits a large drop zone when deployed from 5, 000 feet above ground evel(AGL). AGAS is the cheapest precision airdrop system presently available. 2, record 18, English, - affordable%20guided%20airdrop%20system

1, record 18, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20peu%20co%C3%BBteux%20de%20largage%20de%20pr%C3%A9cision

This flies a load into a specific location from a safe stand-off range vice just utilizing the safety of high altitude. Systems under development range in current weight capacity from 500 to 2000 pounds. The systems use various modes of operation. A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. If the products of combustion cannot escape, fresh air cannot reach the flame 1, record 20, English, - floating%20flame

When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame" :"Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Lack of secondary air can be caused by incorrect venting, clogged flueways, blocked secondary air inlet openings, or lack of natural room makeup air to the oven. 2, record 20, English, - floating%20flame

The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 22, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 22, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

norther : The term has several specific applications : 1) In the southern United States, especially in Texas(Texas norther), in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Gulf of Panama away from the coast, and in Central America(norte), the norther is a strong cold wind from between northeast and northwest. It occurs between November and April, freshening during the afternoon and decreasing at night. It is a cold air outbreak associated with the southward movement of a cold anticyclone. It is usually preceded by a warm and cloudy or rainy spell with southerly winds. The norther comes as a rushing blast and brings a sudden drop of temperature of as much as 25°F in one hour or 50°F in three hours in winter. 2) The California norther is a strong, very dry, dusty, northerly wind that blows in late spring, summer, and early fall in the valley of California or on the West Coast when pressure is high over the mountains to the north. It lasts from one to four days. The dryness is due to adiabatic warming during descent. In summer it is very hot. 3) The Portuguese norther is the beginning of the trade wind west of Portugal. 4) Norther is used for a strong north wind on the coast of Chile that blows occasionally in summer. 5) In southeast Australia, a hot dry wind from the desert is called a norther. 3, record 23, English, - norther

In other words, as cloud droplets fall, air resists their downward motion and the amount of this air resistance is based on the size of the drop and its rate of fall, or velocity. The speed of the falling cloud droplet increases until the air resistance equals the downward pull of gravity and then begins to fall at a constant speed, no longer accelerating downward. This constant speed that is finally reached is called the drop's terminal velocity, or fall speed. 2, record 24, English, - falling%20speed

The exact form taken by hygroscopic nuclei is most frequently that of droplets of solution. It was established by Lord Kelvin that the vapour pressure over the surface of a water drop in equilibrium with its surroundings is greater than that over a plane water surface.... The vapour pressure over the surface of a solution is always less than that over pure water at the same temperature. For this reason, a solution is hygroscopic, and absorbs water vapour from the surrounding air, becoming diluted in the process. From this it follows that nuclei in the form of droplets of solution may be expected to be satisfactory condensation kerns. When particles of hygroscopic substances are exposed to sufficiently damp air, they become droplets of solution. 3, record 25, English, - hygroscopic%20nucleus

The Vapor Diffusion Apparatus(VDA-2) uses the "hanging drop" method often used on Earth to crystallize proteins. The method is quite simple. Proteins are mixed into a solution that makes them grow-the precipitant solution-and squeezed onto the tip of a syringe. Air release chambers are installed ahead of any metering equipment to ensure accurate measurement of fuel flow. They may be installed in either the pumphouse or on the dispensing platform. They operate on the reduced flow velocity principle which separates and eliminates air from the fuel. As the fuel enters the air release chamber(the diameter of which is much greater than the diameter of the inlet to the air release body), the velocity of the flow is greatly reduced allowing an interval of time for the air to separate from the fuel. The air, being lighter than the liquid, rises to the top of the chamber, where it remains until a sufficient quantity has accumulated to lower the liquid level, causing the float to drop, which in turn opens the vent valve and allows the accumulated air to escape. In most cases the line from the air vent is returned to the storage or scavenger tank to prevent spraying fuel into the surrounding area in case of a malfunction of the air release chamber. 1, record 37, English, - air%20release%20chamber

1, record 37, French, - chambre%20de%20d%C3%A9sa%C3%A9ration

Return Flow Mechanical Atomizing Oil Burners. This [commercial-industrial oil] burner is a modification of a mechanical atomizing burner; atomization is accomplished by oil pressure alone.... The burner was developed for use in large installations such as on shipboard and in electric generating stations.... It is also used for firing large hot water boilers compressed air is too expensive for atomizing oil in large burners.... Wide range is accomplished by use of a return-flow nozzle which has a swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice or sprayer plate. Good atomization is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the oil pump suction. Control of burning rate is accomplished by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and the oil return lines. 1, record 41, English, - return%20flow%20mechanical%20atomizing%20oil%20burner

Air drying. The air supply to the ozonizer must be very dry because the presence of water vapour produces a drop in the dielectric constant of the gaseous medium, and in extreme cases the non-disruptive discharge may give way to the formation of an arc, resulting in rapid deterioration of the electrodes. 1, record 47, English, - air%20drying

1, record 48, French, - culasse%20h%C3%A9misph%C3%A9rique%20%C3%A0%20soupapes%20oppos%C3%A9es

In the Spooner travelling oven the hot air circulates rapidly in a closed circuit, the small temperature drop on each cycle being made good by heat from the burner. The hot air enters the baking chamber, top and bottom, through patent nozzles, which ensure that the heat is evenly distributed over the whole length and width of the conveyor.(...) 1, record 49, French, - four%20%C3%A0%20convection%20forc%C3%A9e
