CONT

The primary function of an air handling system for any type of clean room is to control the level of airborne contaminant particles by constantly filtering and recirculating the air. The arrangement of a system depends on whether it is to be a conventional clean room, unidirectional vertical or horizontal flow clean room. In the basic form, however, it consists of a fan, ducting for inlet and exhaust air and an air filtration system.

CONT

Because the façades are not airtight, building occupants often block up the fresh-air ducts, thereby interfering with the air circulation system.

A ... wind turbine ... designed to draw air from the high-pressure region on the upwind face of a building and exhaust it into the low-pressure region above a flat roof.

CONT

[The] ducted wind turbine ... is comprised of a duct open on the front face of a building that will suck in the air, a vacuum created on the top of the building will accelerate the air, allowing a turbine in the duct to extract energy.

OBS

A ducted wind turbine... will operate efficiently over a 60° range of wind directions, with the ducting serving to dampen any turbulence in the air stream, which can be a serious problem when other buildings are in close proximity.

CONT

A dual cycle fan jet engine suitable for use in STOL [Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft] aircraft with augmentor wings is disclosed. In a cruise mode of operation, primary air and fan air from a fan jet engine are axially exhausted rearwardly in a conventional manner. In an augmentor mode of operation, the primary air is diverted by valves through an augmentor turbine where it is expanded and exhausted at a relatively low velocity, and the fan air is diverted by valves through an augmentor compressor driven by the augmentor turbine. The supercharged output of the augmentor compressor is directed via wing ducting to the augmentor flaps of the associated augmentor wing.

OBS

The use of an augmenter wing as a lift enhancement device has been the subject of extensive research. In blown wing or other aircraft the augmenter wing would be disposed aft and above the aircraft’s main wing to utilize otherwise "lost" airflow.

The XB-25E was a standard production modified for anti-icing research. The carburetor air intake duct was faired internally into the top of the cowling and an anti-icing air intake was mounted at the bottom. Each row of cylinders exhausted through a separate exchanger, one ported outboard and one inboard of each nacelle. Ram air from the lower cowling duct was routed underneath the engine to a split duct, each side of which was directed to one of the heat exchangers. Air admitted to these heat exchangers was directed through a series of gates that allowed diversion of heated air either to the anti-icing system or out the exhaust. A complex system of ducting led the hot air to the outer wing leading edges and also into the fuselage and to the leading edges of the tail. It was intended that the temperature of the hot air would be sufficiently high that ice on the wing leading edges surfaces would be vaporized rather than melted, which would have prevented water from flowing aft and then freezing again on flaps and ailerons.

The ductwork between the front and rear compressor in this embodiment of the invention consists of fixed ducting which forms the air exit flow path from the front compressor and a rotating transition drum also containing ducting.

OBS

In one setting the ducting in the transition drum is positioned to feed the exit flow of the front compressor directly into the rear compressor for conventional turbojet operation. In the other arrangement which closely simulates turbofan operation the ducting is positioned so that the front compressor air is diverted to the external stream and independent air flow enters the rear compressor. Thus, the transition drum changes the compressors from series action with independent air flow.

Ducts, fans and air cleaners are integral parts of a local exhaust system. Ducting systems transport air from the hood to the fan or towards exit opening. The [freeze prevention] system is located in the aft accessory compartment and consists of a temperature control(modulating and shut-off) valve, temperature control thermostat, mufflers, and ducts. The ground operated APU is used with the left-hand pack to provide the warm air required to raise the temperature of the heat exchanger cooling air. The system taps into the APU bleed air supply duct before the check valve at the elbow under the catwalk and air is distributed by auxiliary ducts to a muffler under the flow control valve of each pack and to a single spray bar upstream of the left diverter valve. A temperature control valve in the ducting regulates the volume of bleed air to be used.

The radio rack cooling fan is installed in the forward end of the left utility tunnel, in a section of ducting that bypasses the radio rack cooling overboard exhaust ducting.... The fan is used to create a flow of cooling air through the electrical and electronic equipment installations when the airplane is on the ground. The fan is also used to direct radio rack cooling exhaust air beneath the forward lower cargo compartment floor, to maintain temperature above freezing in the cargo compartment. The fan is an axial-flow type powered by a 115-volt, 400-cycle, 3-phase electric motor.

CONT

During normal operation, airflow is produced by a radio rack blower, located in the air conditioning compartment below the radio rack. The blower is a single stage axial flow fan, driven by a three phase 200 volt electrical motor, powered by No. 1 AC bus.
