The toroidal propeller allows a small multirotor unpiloted aircraft, or drone, to operate more quietly than current drones that use propeller forms unchanged since the beginning of aviation. [It] consists of two blades looping together so that the tip of one blade curves back into the other. This closed-form structure minimizes the drag effects of swirling air tunnels... created at the tips of blades and strengthens the overall stiffness of the propeller. Winterkill is the most common type of fish kill. When severe, it has devastating effects on fish populations and fishing quality. Winterkill occurs during especially long, harsh winters... Winterkill begins with distressed fish gasping for air at holes in the ice and ends with large numbers of dead fish which bloat as the water warms in early spring.... During periods of prolonged ice cover, the lake is sealed off from the atmosphere and cannot be recharged with oxygenated air. Furthermore, ice and snow reduce the amount of sunlight reaching aquatic plants, thereby reducing photosynthesis and oxygen production. 4, record 8, English, - fish%20winterkill

In December of 1994, the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean(TAO) Array was completed. The TAO Array is a series of about seventy buoys carefully placed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Each buoy has special equipment that records information about the water and the air above the water. All of the buoys work together, forming an array, to give scientists a big picture of climate conditions in the area. The buoys send their data to scientists everyday by way of weather satellites that orbit Earth. Since 1994, scientists have been able to watch the water and the air for signs of El Niño. Once they notice that the water is getting warmer, they can keep track of the other changes and help to make predictions about the effects of El Niño better than they ever have before. 1, record 17, English, - Tropical%20Atmosphere%20Ocean%20Array

1, record 17, French, - R%C3%A9seau%20oc%C3%A9an%2Datmosph%C3%A8re%20pour%20observation%20dans%20les%20mers%20tropicales

To grow some vegetables successfully, the gardener must be able to control the conditions in the immediate vicinity of the plants. It is particularly important to control humidity, the effects of wind, and the temperature of the soil and air. Fortunately, there is help available in the form of protective coverings such as hot kaps, mulches and tunnels, which can be used to great advantage in controlling the "microenvironment" of your garden.... Poly Tunnels. These mini-greenhouses can produce excellent results when used in combination with poly mulches. 3, record 24, French, - coefficient%20de%20portance

Speed up effects : Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump,... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working : the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect. "So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 meters per second in a natural "tunnel". A ramrocket engine combines a rocket-cycle with a ramjet cycle. The "heart" of such a rocket-based combined-cycle engine is the ejector where the propulsive streams of both cycles mix. The propulsive efficiency of the ramrocket will greatly depend on the losses incurred in the ejector of the engine. In this project, computational fluid dynamic methods are employed to numerically simulate the turbulent mixing of supersonic/subsonic flows in the presence of finite-rate kerosene/air combustion. The effects of geometry of the ejector and afterburning in the rocket exhaust on flow losses in the ejector and its compression ratio are explored. The ramrocket is a candidate for "next generation" air-breathing reusable space launchers 2, record 36, English, - ejector

It may also be polluted and contaminated if it contains harmful quantities of lead, mercury, etc., from man-made sources. Since alteration means change, change in the environment is synonymous with alteration. In this case, it is a change for the worse. Often the effects of alteration are neither immediately discernible nor accurately predictable. Who can foresee what will happen to a 1970 American baby who is born in an air-conditioned hospital, taken home in an air-conditioned car, reared in an air-conditioned apartment, schooled in an air-conditioned school and amused by recreational activities in an air-conditioned bubble? This unnatural alteration of normal rises and falls in daily temperature may result in eventual genetic changes. And what alteration is being wrought on the urban atmosphere during the summer while hundreds of thousands of air-conditioned apartments and homes pump their waste heat out into the atmosphere and the occupants undergo alteration of temperature and humidity inside? Undesirable levels of pollutants-toxic and otherwise-of course cause alteration of air, water and soil. 1, record 39, English, - change%20in%20the%20environment

Even the seemingly small level of disagreement between surface and deep layer temperature trends can not be reproduced by current GCMís, which slave globally-averaged deep tropospheric temperatures to any surface temperature fluctuations... However, we know that convective air currents and the air-conditioning effects of water cause the atmospheric temperature profile to change by a much larger amount, about 80 deg. C, between the surface and 10 km altitude when compared to a hypothetical Earth without these processes... Thus, it is critical to validate whether the parameterizations of moist convective processes in GCMís are realistic enough to capture the ways in which the tropospheric temperature profile fluctuates naturally in response to this transport of heat from the surface to the upper troposphere. 1, record 40, English, - tropospheric%20temperature%20profile

IDLH : Sigle anglais signifiant «Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health.» 6, record 45, French, - pr%C3%A9sentant%20un%20danger%20imm%C3%A9diat%20pour%20la%20vie%20ou%20la%20sant%C3%A9

Lockheed Martin has begun drop tests of its SCALPEL low-collateral-damage munition, the company announced May 27. Three inert SCALPELs were released by two AV-8B Harriers during a recent flight test at the Navy's China Lake test range in California, hitting their marks. The next phase of flights will demonstrate warhead lethality, the company said. SCALPEL is essentially a weaponized version of the company's enhanced laser guided training round with improved guidance and a small warhead. It is envisioned as an affordable option for close air support roles, especially in urban areas where it is crucial to hit targets precisely and avoid collateral effects. Medium-and large-sized unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-1 Predator could carry it as well as manned aircraft like the USAF F-16 and Navy/Marine Corps F/A-18 and AV-8B, according to Lockheed Martin. 3, record 46, English, - small%20contained%20area%20laser%20precision%20energetic%20load

Circular, square, rectangular, and elliptical convergent nozzles and convergent-divergent and plug nozzles were investigated. The spectral distributions of the sound power for the engine and the air jet were in good agreement for the case where the engine data were not greatly affected by reflection or jet interference effects. Such power spectra for a subsonic or slightly choked engine or air jet show that the peaks of the spectra occur at a Strouhal number of 0. 3. 2, record 49, English, - far%20noise%20field

Fibers are "locked" together via air jets at regular or irregular intervals. The process is used to get special effect yarn(i. e., mixing dye variants to get heather effects upon subsequent dying or combining different colors of solution dyed fiber). Various air-entangling processes exist making it possible to produce a wide range or esthetics in finished yarns, from highly blended, near solid looks to yarns where individual colors are accented and color separation mimics that of plied yarns. 3, record 56, English, - air%20entangling

Crib-biting and wind-sucking are different varieties of the same vice, which are learned chiefly by young horses. In each case the horse swallows air. A ’crib-biter’ effects this by grasping the edge of the manger or some other convenient fixture with the incisor teeth; it then raises the floor of the mouth; the soft palate is forced open; a swallowing movement occurs; and a gulp of air is passed down the gullet into the stomach. A ’wind-sucker’ achieves the same end, but it does not require a resting-place for the teeth.... Some horses which have been crib-biters learn to wind-suck when remedial measures are taken, and there are some wind-suckers which learn to crib-bite. 2, record 81, English, - crib

1, record 81, French, - tiquer%20%C3%A0%20l%27appui

Visible leaf injury is the most readily detected and most frequently reported symptom of exposure to NO2, and has been documented in many reports of damage to economic crops. Studies have shown, however, that declines in plant growth and yield can occur without such visible symptoms. 1, record 94, English, - visible%20leaf%20injury
