Des bulles d'air entraînées avec la pâte dans la caisse d'arrivée peuvent créer des défauts d'aspect dans la feuille (trous, petites taches), et provoquer un mauvais égouttage sur la toile de même que des instabilités dans le système de répartition. De petites quantités d'air se mélangent habituellement à la suspension lorsqu'on l'agite ou qu'elle tombe dans un cuvier. La plupart des problèmes sont cependant dus à la fosse à eaux blanches. L'eau qui s'écoule librement de la zone de formation sur la toile tombe dans des bacholles de récupération qui canalisent l'eau blanche vers une fosse placée soit sous la toile, soit du côté transmission de la machine. L'eau blanche récupère inévitablement une certaine quantité d'air; un temps de séjour relativement long dans un canal découvert est souhaitable pour que l'air puisse s'échapper et que la turbulence se dissipe avant qu'on ne mélange les eaux de la fosse sous toile avec le reste de la suspension.
