What is aerobic wastewater treatment? Aerobic treatment of wastewater is a biological process that uses oxygen to break down organic contaminants and other pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorous. Oxygen is continuously mixed into the wastewater or sewage by a mechanical aeration device, such as an air blower or compressor. Aerobic microorganisms then feed on the wastewater's organic matter, converting it into carbon dioxide and biomass which can be removed. 1, record 10, English, - aerobic%20wastewater%20treatment

There are two basic processes for thermal treatment of sludges. One, wet air oxidation, is the flameless oxidation of sludges at temperatures of 450 to 550 °F and pressures of about 1200 psig [pounds per square inch gage] The other type, heat treatment, is similar but carried out at temperatures of 350 to 400 ºF and pressures of 150 to 300 psig. A corona is generated by applying a high-frequency high-voltage signal to an electrode, which is separated from a grounded surface by an air gap and a dielectric. No current will pass through the air gap until there is enough voltage to affect the electrical breakdown of the air, typically 3, 000 to 5, 000 volts per millimeter. The corona treatment of the substrate results from the bombardment and penetration of these ions into the molecular structure at the surface of the substrate. It is the oxidation and polar-group formation in the surface molecules, in conjunction with the etching of the surface from the ion bombardment that induces the increase in surface energy of the treated material. 3, record 26, English, - corona%20treatment%20system

Free products and dissolved petroleum components from the surface of the contaminated aquifer are captured and treated via multi-phase extraction & treatment. Bioslurping induces a horizontal vacuum gradient on the targeted monitor/recovery wells through a slurp tube which is inserted into each well. Product and groundwater are entrained in droplet form in a high velocity air stream and brought to the surface for treatment. Following air/liquid separation the liquid phase is treated by a combination of oil/water separation, air stripping, and liquid phase carbon treatment before being discharged. The off-gas is treated(if necessary) by vapour phase carbon treatment. The advantages of multi-phase extraction & treatment include : a high product to groundwater extraction ratio; aeration of the vadose zone which enhances natural biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants; all treatment components may be housed in a turn-key mobile remedial unit; a simple product recovery technology which can be transferred to conventional remedial applications such as pump and treat, sparging and vapour extraction system(VES) applications. 1, record 30, French, - bioaspiration

Demonstrations of this technology are routinely available upon request. 2, record 31, English, - multi%2Dphase%20high%20vacuum%20extraction%20%26%20treatment

2, record 31, French, - extraction%20et%20traitement%20multiphase%20sous%20vide%20pouss%C3%A9

Vapex (vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil. 3, record 33, English, - vapour%20extraction

The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour (ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone (aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well. 8, record 33, English, - vapour%20extraction

An important issue for the treatment of pressure ulcers is the relief of pressure. A variety of mattresses have been used for this purpose, including various foam pads, air mattresses, and water beds. Acceptance has grown for the use of pressure-reducing devices such as air-fluidized beds and low-air-loss beds. These high-tech beds have been shown to dramatically reduce skin-surface pressure to levels that are less than capillary-filling pressures, even under bony prominences. 2, record 41, English, - low%20air%20loss%20bed

A treatment, most often SO2, but in some cases H2SO4 or HCl, applied a) After a final chlorine dioxide, hyprochlorite or peroxide stage to destroy residual bleaching agent and remove metal ions which prevents brightness loss and avoids fibre degradation, and to create a pH favourable for brightness stability(alkaline pulps tend to yellow on exposure to light and air) ;b) As a pretreatment before an oxygen stage, which tends to improve both brightness and physical strength, probably by removing metal ions from pulp; and c) Between stages, such as peroxide-hydrosulphite, to eliminate the washing steps by creating acid conditions necessary for the hydrosulphite stage, and to destroy residual peroxide by reduction which would otherwise consume costly hydrosulphite; d) Has been used in place of a chelation stage in a TCF sequence with peroxide. 1, record 58, French, - traitement%20%C3%A0%20l%27acide

Biological Filter. High-rate treatment can also be obtained in a biological filter system. Biological filtration is a technique for promoting contact between a free-flowing wastewater and a stationary growth of microorganisms in the presence of atmospheric air. The system does not depend on filtration in the usual sense for its effect.... Biological filter systems(such as the trickling filter) have generally proven to be unsuitable for pulp and paper wastewaters, exhibiting even greater instability to waste variability than activated sludge systems. However, the rotary disc system(a more recent design of biological filter) has been successful on a number of wastewaters and appears to deserve consideration for future applications. In this system a biological growth is cultivated on the disc surfaces. A series of closely-spaced corrugated plastic discs are anchored to a rotating shaft and supported above a trough through which the wastewater is channeled at a controlled rate. The lower 30 to 40% of each disc extends into the wastewater, while the upper portion is exposed to air. Thus, an area of biological growth alternates between submergence to absorb food and exposure to air for oxidation. Any number of rotating assemblies can be used in series to achieve the desired degree of BOD removal. 1, record 61, English, - rotary%20disc%20biological%20filter

1, record 61, French, - filtre%20biologique%20%C3%A0%20disques%20rotatifs

The alternatives for nitrogen oxide control are boiler operation changes, combustion equipment modifications to reduce NOx formation, and flue gas treatment... In the U. S. and Canada, combustion modification(CM) is the most common method of NOx reduction. NOx can be reduced by injecting the combustion air in two stages, normally by reducing air flow to the burner and injecting the remainder through "overfire" air ports in the side of the boiler. Low-NOx burners that accomplish staged conditions within the burner flame have also been developed. Staged combustion... reduces emission by 15-25%. 2, record 68, English, - low%2DNOx%20burner

1, record 68, French, - br%C3%BBleur%20%C3%A0%20faible%20taux%20d%27%C3%A9missions%20de%20NOx
