Today, advances in medical technology enable speech production by means of a voice prosthesis. By creating a small surgical passage(TEP, or Tracheoesophageal Puncture), inside the stoma, from the back wall of the trachea into the esophageal wall, a small one-inched valved tube(voice prosthesis) can be placed into this passage to enable tracheoesophageal speech. Voice is produced by blocking the stoma, either with a finger or an adjustable tracheostoma valve, so that exhaled air from the lungs can be directed from the trachea through the prosthesis into the esophagus(where vibrations are produced) and then out through the mouth. Fluent, conversational speech is usually acquired within a few days. 2, record 8, English, - voice%20prosthesis

3, record 8, French, - proth%C3%A8se%20vocale

One characteristic of a dry-pipe system is a delay in time between the opening of a sprinkler and the discharge of water, which may allow the fire to spread and more sprinklers to open. The delay is due to the time required to exhaust the air from the sprinkler piping. The difficulty may be partly overcome by installation of quick-opening devices which either increase the rate of discharge of air from the piping or accelerate opening of the dry valve when one or more sprinklers operate, depending upon the type of device used. 4, record 15, English, - quick%2Dopening%20device

As the level of the effluent within the wet sump rises, air is trapped in a pipe called a 'sensor pipe’, the pressure of which increases as the effluent level continues to rise... This increase in air pressure is subsequently transferred via flexible tubing to the top section of the interface valve which is known as the "controller. "Eventually this pressure becomes great enough to operate a switch within the controller which then allows vacuum pressure to be transferred to the main body of the valve, causing it to open... 2, record 25, English, - interface%20valve

There are two types of D2O liquid collection systems. The open method uses drip trays under potential leak points such as flanged joints(used rarely). The closed system conveys leakage directly to collection tanks without it coming in contact with the atmosphere to prevent downgrading from moisture in the air. This type of leakage generally occurs from double-packed valve stems or bellows-sealed valves. 1, record 51, English, - bellows%2Dsealed%20valve

1, record 51, French, - vanne%20%C3%A0%20soufflet

... dry pipe sprinkler systems have more corrosion, rust, and scale build up in the sprinkler piping system than in wet pipe systems. This build up is mainly due to the presence of oxygen and moisture in the sprinkler piping. Moisture and condensation from room humidity, air supply drawn by the dry pipe air compressor, and wetting the pipe wall by accidental tripping of the dry pipe valve, and by full flow trip tests... furthers the development of scale. 1, record 62, English, - dry%20pipe%20air%20compressor

Pneumatic systems are often compared to hydraulic systems, but such comparisons can only hold true in general terms.... Control valves are... a necessary part of a typical pneumatic system.... The control valve consists of a lever with two lobes. [In the off position], a spring holds the left poppet closed so that compressed air entering the pressure port cannot flow to the brakes. [In the on position], one lobe of the lever holds the left poppet open and a spring closes the right poppet. Compressed air now flows around the opened left poppet, through a drilled passage, and into a chamber below the right poppet. Since the right poppet is closed, the high-pressure air flows out of the brake port and into the brake line to apply the brakes. To release the brakes, the control valve is returned to the off position. 3, record 64, English, - control%20valve

A chest tube is a tube inserted into the chest cavity for removal of air or fluid, or both; it is needed when the normally airtight pleural space has been penetrated through surgery or trauma, when a defect in the alveoli allows air to enter the intrapleural space, or when there is an accumulation of fluid, as from pleural effusion. Excessive air or fluid in the pleural space can cause collapse of the lung and the danger of mediastinal shift. 4, record 67, English, - chest%20tube

Chest drain is a conduit to remove air or fluid from the pleural cavity. The fluid can be blood, pus or a pleural effusion. Allows re-expansion of the underlying lung. Chest drains incorporate the use of a one-way valve to drain fluid or air from the pleural cavity. The valve prevents back-flow of air and fluid into the pleural cavity. A thermal relief valve is similar to a regular system relief valve; however, such valves are installed in parts of the hydraulic system where fluid pressure is trapped and may need to be relieved because of the increase caused by higher temperatures. During the flight of an airplane, it is quite likely that fluid in many of the hydraulic lines will be at a low temperature. When the airplane lands, this cold fluid will be trapped in the landing-gear system, the flap system, and other systems, because selector valves are in the neutral or OFF position. The fluid-temperature increase owing to warm air on the ground results in fluid expansion and could cause damage unless thermal relief valves are adjusted to pressures which are above those required for the operation of the systems; hence they do not interfere with normal operation. 2, record 70, English, - thermal%20relief%20valve

The amount of oil pressure directed to the actuator is controlled by two separate controllers : the density controller and the differential pressure controller. The density controller senses the temperature and pressure of the airflow in the engine intake. The differential pressure controller senses the difference between engine manifold pressure and the air pressure between the compressor and the throttle valve. When fully open, the waste gate valve routes the exhaust flow directly out the tailpipe, away from the turbine wheel. When fully closed, the waste gate valve routes the exhaust flow through the turbine wheel, thereby driving the turbine. During most stages of operation the controllers modulate the position of the valve to drive the turbine at the speed required to meet the engine power selection. The system is designed to work with no input from the pilot. 1, record 86, English, - density%20controller

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. On the front of the panel are other controls for volume, temperature, and suit pressure. 2, record 91, English, - display%20and%20control%20module

2, record 99, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20gestion%20de%20l%27air%20des%20modules%20am%C3%A9ricains
