English

Subject field(s)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

A manufactured fiber with internal voids created by air injection or use of special spinnerets.

Record 6 2011-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
DEF

Ice cover resulting from the packing and freezing together of floes, brash ice and other forms of floating ice.

OBS

Over time, a consolidated ice covered is referred to as first year ice. It has a high brine content and generally a smooth surface. In the subsequent summer melt period, brine drainage reduces the brine concentration, and a low saline ice with air voids is produced. This is known as multi year ice.

Record 7 2011-06-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Masonry Practice
DEF

A construction work composed of elements containing air voids.

CONT

Impact sound insulation [can be] determined by laboratory testing. A standard "tapping machine" is set to operate on a horizontal steel plate which rests against the test specimen. The sound transmission through the wall is then measured and the impact sound levels are converted to normalised levels using a reference equivalent absorption area of 1.0 m². Adequate impact sound insulation is achieved if the performance of the test specimen is equivalent to, or better than, the performance of a cavity brick construction under the same test conditions.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maçonnerie
OBS

corps creux : matériau de maçonnerie moulé comportant une proportion importante de vides d'air : blocs, briques creuses, et surtout hourdis creux pour entrevous de planchers.

Record 8 2004-10-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
  • Soil Tests (Construction)
DEF

The gradual, slow compression of a cohesive soil due to weight acting on it, which occurs as water or water and air are driven out of the voids in the soil.

OBS

Consolidation only occurs with clays or other soils of low permeability. It is not the same as compaction, which is a mechanical, immediate process and only occurs in soils with at least some sand.

OBS

consolidation: Less specific term than "diagenesis."

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des sols
  • Essais du sol (Construction)
DEF

[...] phénomène naturel qui se produit lorsque, par l'effet de son propre poids, le terrain élimine l'air et l'eau qui existent dans les vides [...]

OBS

Elle est à distinguer du compactage [réalisé] à l'aide d'engins [...]

OBS

  • Demolition (Military)
DEF

In demolitions, to apply gentle, but firm, pressure to a charge to remove air voids in it and between the charge and the target.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Destruction (Militaire)
DEF

En destruction, répéter une pression ferme mais non excessive sur une charge afin d'enlever l'air dans celle-ci ou entre la charge et l'explosif.

Record 10 1999-04-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
  • Road Construction
DEF

A line showing the dry density-moisture content relationship for soil containing no air voids.

CONT

The "zero-voids curve" in Fig. 16. 13 indicates the moisture contents for various dry densities if the material is fully saturated, i. e., all its pores are filled with water. It means that in a regularly compacted earth material, there is some air in the pores.

CONT

The compacted dry density increases with increasing moisture... The increase is limited by saturation-the zero air voids curve-where neutral stress prevents a further reduction in void ratio without a reduction in moisture.

Key term(s)
  • saturation curve

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des sols
  • Construction des voies de circulation
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Metal Joining Processes - Various
CONT

Acoustic microscopy is the term applied to high resolution, high frequency ultrasonic inspection techniques which produce images of features beneath the surface of a sample. Because ultrasonic energy requires continuity of materials to propagate, internal defects such as voids, delaminations and cracks interfere with the transmission and/or reflection of ultrasound signals. Since air is a very poor conductor of ultrasound, gaps within or between samples are easily visualized by the localized changes in the ultrasound.
