English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
CONT

Radioactivity mapping system... airborne system for mapping radioactivity levels on the ground and which can be used for locating point sources of radioactivity or contamination over wide areas.... The system includes a large sodium iodide gamma ray detector and associated electronics, radiolocation system, radar altimeter and recorder, all under computer control. Using spectrographic analysis, it is possible to determine the radioactive elements in contaminated areas. An image-processing system produces colour-coded maps showing radioactivity levels in the area under survey.

CONT

Another key challenge is that of size, weight and power consumption(SWAP). Many embedded systems are used in industries where there is constant additional pressure to reduce SWAP. Examples include medical imaging, where there is a push to develop portable diagnostic imaging systems enabling easier use and increased flexibility necessitating smaller, lighter processing solutions. In military and aerospace applications, many systems will be used in airborne, sea-going or land-based vehicles where space and payload for processing electronics is generally limited, as is the overall power consumption that can be supported.
