An ammeter is used to monitor the performance of the airplane electrical system. The ammeter shows if the alternator/generator is producing an adequate supply of electrical power. It also indicates whether or not the battery is receiving an electrical charge.

Full-scale ammeter discharge or rapid fluctuation of the needle usually means alternator malfunction. If this occurs, you should cut the alternator out of the system and conserve battery power by reducing the load on the electrical system. If in flight you should consider landing as soon as possible.

The airplane takeoff performance and power setting are established by approved simple methods, such as adjustments, or by corrections to the takeoff or derated takeoff power setting and performance. When operating with a reduced takeoff power, the power setting parameter which establishes power for takeoff is not considered a takeoff operating limit.

An instrument that indicates in inches of mercury the pressure of the fuel/air mixture in the engine intake manifold.

On an airplane fitted with a controllable pitch or a constant speed propeller, there are two instruments which indicate information about engine power output, the tachometer and the manifold pressure gauge. Settings on the manifold pressure gauge are controlled by the throttle. Colour range markings, similar to those on the tachometer, are incorporated on the dial of the manifold pressure gauge to indicate the normal operating range and operation limits.

Each of the two hydraulic systems for the Douglas DC-9 airplane is provided with an auxiliary, electrically driven, variable-displacement hydraulic pump. The pumps are explosion-resistant, hydraulic-fluid-cooled and lubricated, self-supercharged, and pressure-and horsepower-controlled. They are capable of supplying a nonpulsating flow of hydraulic fluid in varying volume, depending upon system pressure... Control of the pumps is accomplished by means of switches in the flight compartment. If one engine should stop or if the hydraulic pump on that engine should fail, it is merely necessary to turn on the electric pump switch to place the system back in full operation. Each pump is connected to its respective system by means of flexible hoses with a ground power suction disconnect fitting installed in the suction line. The left pump can be quickly removed and installed in the right system if the right pump fails.

Testing of the circuit in the "as found" position revealed that the shutoff valve was not electrically connected. The valve requires electrical power to be energized "open. The major components of the stairway are the carriage, stair, handrails, and shroud. The carriage consists of an actuator, side plates, shafts, gears, chains, sprockets, cams, and cam followers.... Tracks in the forward and aft sides of the shroud support the carriage and provide a means of installing the stairway in the airplane. Springs, mounted in the closed end of the shroud, provide tension on the carriage to prevent movement of the stair when the stair is retracted. Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified.
