An instrument that senses yaw movement about the vertical axis.It indicates a change in direction relative to the magnetic north pole.

A gyroscope instrument for indicating direction, containing a free gyroscope which holds its position in azimuth and thus indicates angular deviation from a pre-set heading.

CONT

The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off.

The directional gyroscope is used in aircraft and is sometimes called a self-levelling free gyroscope corrected for drift.

Le conservateur de cap, également appelé directionnel, est un gyroscope libre dont l'axe est orienté horizontalement selon la direction qui lui a été assignée lors de sa mise en rotation. Cette orientation sera prise pour référence horizontale. En choisissant le nord magnétique comme référence, cet appareil indiquera le cap magnétique de l'avion. Il faudra le «caler» avant chaque vol lorsque l'avion est aligné sur la piste (piste dont on connaît l'orientation).

CONT

Le conservateur de cap, ou gyroscope directionnel, est l'un des trois instruments à gyroscope. Aligné avec le compas, il donne une indication précise et stable concernant le cap magnétique de l'appareil. Le conservateur de cap constitue une aide importante car le compas est sujet à des erreurs causées par l'accélération, la décélération et la courbure du champ magnétique terrestre, particulièrement sous les hautes latitudes. Il arrive fréquemment que le compas oscille; il est particulièrement difficile à lire dans les turbulences ou pendant les manœuvres. Fonctionnement. Le gyroscope du conservateur de cap pivote dans un plan vertical. Une carte comportant des caps maintient son orientation lorsque l'avion tourne. Le mouvement apparent de la carte donne au pilote une indication précise et instantanée du cap de l'avion et de la direction dans laquelle il tourne. La carte est marquée de 5 degrés en 5 degrés, avec une indication chiffrée tous les 30 degrés et les points cardinaux repérés par N, S, E, O.

There are major advantages to public amenity, in the case of certain airport situations, in adopting at least some noise abatement operating procedures. The purpose of these procedures is to keep aircraft as far away as possible from communities and to secure their operation when in the vicinity of communities in ways which keep noise disturbance to the minimum.

In order to maintain the required obstacle free airspace in the vicinity of a certified airport, regulations known as airport zoning regulations(AZR) may be enacted by Transport Canada. These AZR are enacted not only to protect the present operations of an airport, but also to help ensure that potential and future development surrounding the airport remains compatible with the safe operation of aircraft and of the airport itself. Lands within the airport boundary are under the control of the airport operator and do not require AZR. Since Transport Canada certification requirements normally extend beyond the airport boundary, AZR are enacted on the surrounding off-airport lands. For AZR to be enacted an airport certificate must be in force at an airport or the land in question must be designated as an airport site.... AZR restrict the heights of buildings, structures and objects(including natural growth) on regulated lands, and protect aircraft from potential hazards, such as bird strikes and electronic signal interference.
