ALIGNED FORM [4 records]

Record 1 2010-04-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plastic Materials
DEF

Continuous roving that has been aligned side by side in one direction and then impregnated with a thermosetting resin system to form a continuous sheet of material and of which the thickening has been obtained by curing to "B" stage and/or by evaporation of solvent.

CONT

The resin is applied from a melt or from solution and is of a suitable viscosity to hold the fibres in place. Uni-directional prepregs are supplied either in sheets or on spools, interleaved with non-contaminating carrier material, and are capable of being moulded or laminated under heat and pressure.

OBS

uni-directional prepreg; UD: term and abbreviation standardized by ISO.

Domaine(s)
  • Matières plastiques
DEF

  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
CONT

Gel spinning is a special process used to obtain high strength or other special fiber properties. The polymer is not in a true liquid state during extrusion. Not completely separated, as they would be in a true solution, the polymer chains are bound together at various points in liquid crystal form. This produces strong inter-chain forces in the resulting filaments that can significantly increase the tensile strength of the fibers. In addition, the liquid crystals are aligned along the fiber axis by the shear forces during extrusion. The filaments emerge with an unusually high degree of orientation relative to each other, further enhancing strength.

OBS

The process can also be described as dry-wet spinning, since the filaments first pass through air and then are cooled further in a liquid bath. Some high-strength polyethylene and aramid fibers are produced by gel spinning.

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Masonry Practice
DEF

Rusticated stone block with 45-degree beveled edges aligned so that the joints form a right angle V-shaped groove.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maçonnerie
CONT

[...] On distingue couramment : [...]

CONT

Geotextile grids are manufactured from polymer sheets using the production sequence illustrated in Figure 2. 16. The first stage involves precise punching of a regular pattern of holes into the sheet. This is followed by carefully controlled stretching of the sheet in one direction while it is gently heated.... If no further processing is carried out a uniaxial grid with narrow rectangular apertures is formed.... The term "uniaxial" arises from the alignment of the stretched polymer ribs and the greatest strength properties in one direction. An alternative form of geotextile grid may be produced by incorporating a second stretching stage where the uniaxial grid is pulled in the transverse direction to give a biaxial grid with a squarer aperture shape.... In this case the term "biaxial" refers to the fact that both the stretched ribs and the strength properties are aligned in two directions.

OBS
